December 2, 2007 Update

Dear Fods,

We had our first snow of the season last evening. The back yard, creek and woods look very beautiful this morning.

Debbie ended the high dose steroids last Sunday and by Wednesday all of the old demons were making their way back into her life. She had her first significant fever on Wednesday and they are now a regular visitor every night and sometimes during the day. Last evening she was up to 103.9 with rigors and a new cough. At about 1:00 AM we moved Debbie into the jacuzzi and the warm water settled the rigors down, the meds kicked in and she was able to get some well deserved rest. The old nurse kept taking her temp on and off for the rest of the evening and she did not come down to 101 until around 7:00 AM. She is sleeping now, but still looks a little pink in her cheeks.

Yesterday FODs Edie and Mike came up from Roanoke, VA for a visit and the visit did Debbie well. Because Friday night was much like last night, Debbie was still in bed when Edie arrived, but the two good friends were able to visit and Edie helped Debbie position some of the army of Santas from the basement. The rest will remain POW's for the rest of the Season.

Of course, through all of this Debbie was able to eat a cheesesteak and fries for lunch which was a treat for our Roanoke FODS -- as they cannot get such cuisine in the South. Later in the evening, the boys put one of the Christmas trees up so that things are looking a little more like the Holidays.

After lunch FODs Cathy and Mary stopped by for a cup of tea and they brought Debbie buckets of Christmas cookies for the Holidays. Everyone had a nice visit until Debbie ran out of gas at around 3:00 PM. She had a nice rest until the fevers, et al., started later in the evening. Hopefully, we will do a better job today of keeping ahead of this stuff with the meds.

Tomorrow Debbie is scheduled to start a new outpatient chemo regime using an FDA approved drug called "Dacogen." The course of treatment calls for the drug to be administered for 5 consecutive days during a 30 day cycle. Because this is not a clinical trial, Dr. Porter has much more flexibility to alter the dose and it will be delivered IV rather than by injection. Because Debbie's counts tend to plummet with the chemo, we do not want to take the chance of another bout of cellulitis.

Hopefully, this chemo will put the demons back into their cages for a while and give Debbie a break for the Christmas Holidays. We can only hope for the best.

Thanks again for all of your cards, blogs, calls and visits. They really cheer Debbie up.

Debbie sends her love to all.

Hi Debbie,
Those darn fevers. I hope they go away soon. Good luck with your chemo this week. Hopefully it will do the trick. I'm sure you're not looking forward to it but the alternative doesn't sound very good either! Hang in there. I'm taking a break from painting right now. We're getting new carpet in our bedroom finally so I've been getting that room ready. I put up a few decorations for the holidays but haven't finished decorating yet. I'm hoping the cold weather will put me in the spirit.
Thank you for keeping us posted. I'll be thinking of you all week while you get your treatment.
Take care,
Betty

Those darn fevers is right!

Been thinking, thinking, thinking about you honey and wondering if you had to come off the steroids before starting your chemo.

Praying that this chemo will knock back the symptoms and not be too hard on you. Also glad to read that Dr. Porter will be able to fine tune your dosage and praying that Dacogen will do the trick. I see it's on an outpatient basis too - will you have to go to HUP (grr) or will your nurse be able to give it to you at home?

How nice that Edie and Mike were able to visit and that your Santa army is now on duty. We put up our tree (artificial)today - it's too tall for our ceilings - so I had to bend down the very top of and can't put an angel or star on it. You will remember I used to do an all white/silver tree - it was good for the contemporary house in Jersey. Not so much here - it's kind of slim on ornaments, a couple of moves ago we lost a few boxes and it had a lot of our Christmas stuff in it. It looks okay - but not fabulous! Have you put up your tree yet?

I know how you love your back yard - especially after a snowfall. I bet it's gorgeous.

I love you honey. Thanks so much for posting Joe. Hugs and kisses to all the kids.

More later - K

(Mmm - buckets of Christmas cookies. What sweet elves Mary and Cathy are!)

Hi Debbie and Joe:

I just love checking in and finding a new blog, though I wish those fevers would go away!

All is well here. Colin turned 17 today. We celebrated yesterday with a special dinner ala Rachel Ray. Most of it was worthy of repeating. Aunt Angie liked it pretty much.

Tell Joe I may have to protest in the front yard to free the Santa POW's.

Hope this new regime of Dacogen will be the answer to our prayers we have all been hoping for.

Love to all...COD Eileen

PS...Missouri got ripped off in the BCS Bowl bids. Heck N.D. probably got placed before them.

Hi Chiz-

Just tried to call and got the old ring - no answer deal. Didn't want to keep r-r-ringing the phone if you were on with someone else or otherwise occupied so I hung up before the machine clicked on.

Just needed my Chizzie fix today!

Want you to know I'm thinking about you this morning and sending you good vibes...

I love you, honey. How about today's word?

Inner Peace (can't we all use a little of that?) Here you go...

I accept the gift of peace, and I am filled with strength and serenity.

The quiet of a lake’s depths is unaffected whether its surface is mirror-still, carries the wake of huge waves, or is merely rippled by a gentle breeze. I, too, have inner peace.

If life’s events cause ripples or waves in the outer world, I have the assurance that nothing can disturb the peace and strength of God within me. These gifts are everlasting and soul-deep.

Knowing that God is truly the source of unlimited peace, I am comforted and soothed during the busy events of this season.

Quiet times of communion with God help me nurture inner peace.

I let peace radiate from within me out to others. As it does, I know that I am giving them the best gift of this Christmas season, the gift of peace.

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways.”—
2 Thessalonians 3:16

.. took the day off from work to wait for a repairman to fix our slider door.. ran out to costco and when i came back there was a message on the phone saying " this is the pricipal of your childs school,, just to let you know, there has been rumors about guns at school today,, the police have been here, and everything is fine..the school is safe!" holy you know what, that is the 2nd time in a few years that we've gotten a call like that! Mark called me about 2 hours later to let me know he was fine! apparently some kids brought weapons to retailiate against some kid from a previous fight., or something!. scarey how easily these kids can get their hands on them!
anyways. loved admiring my new carpet all day,, cleaning the house, and getting things ready for patricks arrival this evening..
i do hope and continue to pray that you are doing okay with this new med..want to say that i hope it's not kicking your ass. but i don't want to offend anyone..
your always in my thoughts.. mdf
