October 27, 2007 Update

Dear Fods,

As noted in Jess' last post, Debbie had a good weekend and came off of the antibiotics and steroids on Sunday. Not too surprisingly, Debbie spiked her first temperature on Monday and has basically had a pretty rough week since those meds ended. She had high temperatures every night and last night she peaked at 104.5. She has a new rash developing on her back and arm -- and we all know that this is not a good sign.

We went to Grand View this morning to have bloods drawn and, as usual, the tests are inconclusive. While Debbie has a WBC of 2.8, her Platelets are low @ 13, her Bands are High @ 14, her Sodium, Potassium and Calcium are all low. Something is "cooking" in Debbie and it is going to take some time to find out what it is. We were hoping to get admitted to Grand View for some IV antibiotics, but that did not work out today.

The people at Grand View, as usual, were fantastic. We went to the Emergency room and were taken back in 5 minutes. Labs were drawn and results were delivered within the hour.

Debbie was on the cusp of being admitted to Grand View and there was a bit of a disagreement between HUP and Grand View as to what to do?? This time Grand View had the more conservative view and was willing to admit Debbie to start some IV antibiotics while HUP thought that was unnecessary. Of course the HUP doctor calling the shots was the Oncologist on call -- never met Debbie or has any familarity with Debbie's file -- not to mention the fact that she sounded like she was age 12! In the end, it was decided that Debbie would not be admitted but that she would return to Grand View for platelets later in the evening. Mike and Debbie are there now.

One big difference between Grand View and HUP is that the platelets had to be delivered from Philadelphia to Grand View rather than having a full vault of platelets at Penn. On the other hand, we did have a chance for a nice late lunch / early dinner at an Italian restaurant on the way home, Deb took a nap and when Grand View called, Mike took her back for the platelets. While still an 8-10 hour day, it is much more pleasant at Grand View than at HUP.

We will be meeting with Dr. Porter on Wednesday and the intention is to discuss the next phase of treatment/comfort for Debbie. Her current symptomatology is close to what she had 2 years ago with her high fevers, stomach discomfort and rigors. The first two are back and probably the 3rd is just around the corner. The bath tub is running many times a night and she is not getting much sleep. We need to decide if we stay with HUP or move the next phase of the treatments to Grand View.

Thanks for all of your blogs, cards and calls. They mean the world to Debbie and help her continue on.

Debbie sends her love to all.

Deb, So sorry you're not feeling well again. You looked so good last weekend! Glad you had fun with the grandkids again before starting to feel bad. Stepping up the prayers a notch again. Just hate the thought of you being so uncomfortable. You've been through so much already. wishing you a peaceful, comfortable night. Blessings, Love, Mussie

Hey Debbie:

Am I a bad cousin or what...two blogs and I was unaware that their were new ones.

Great family pictures! So glad you could be a part of the walk. So sorry that you are starting to have those fevers and such again. I am anxious to see what they will suggest for you.

Ran into the city to take Mere a warmer coat tonight and fed some of her friends. The girls were adorable. Mere seems to like school.

Brendan finished his football season 7-1 last week and Colin is headed to the last regular season game on Friday. If they win they are district champs. It will be a challenge but they say they are up for it. I hope they make it past districts!

Mom got a call from Rosie tonight as they had been out celebrating her birthday. She is doing fine though we are still trying to figure out her weight loss. We visit the doctor this coming Wednesday. He should know more.

My hope is that things turn around soon.

Miss you to pieces! COD Eileen

Jeez, what a tricky illness. How can you be so sick this week when you looked so great last week? It's not fair! I was so convinced you were on the mend that I didn't check your blog for several days. Well, at least you had some nice family time before you started feeling bad again. I know that's what's important to you. Hopefully this is just one more bump in your road to recovery and you will be feeling good again soon.
Take care,
Betty

Debbie my Mom loved the care at Grandview and found it very personalable. (She also liked their food too) Hang in there girlfriend, hope you can enjoy Halloween. I attempted to make the boys costumes, needless to say I am not crafty. Carter's snake costume looks like a robot and Hayden's bat costume looks like roadkill with a furry back. The boys think they are great( I guess that is what counts) Jenny

Debbie,

How absolutely dreadful that you're uncomfortable and continuing to suffer from this awful illness. We are so sorry for this.

You look so good in all the photos Joe and Jessie have posted during the past two weeks!!! How can you feel so bad, when you look so good?!?

Please know this: you, Joe, the kids and grandkids continue on our minds, in our hearts, and in our prayers.

Love,

Linda & Tim Radel (and family)

..From all the different blogs to this one,, i think my vote is for grandview.. it's closer, faster and nicer.. the only bad point is waiting for your blood products? do they have oncologists there though?
well, my family is happy - red sox won the world series again! ( sorry kris) Fall ball is also over for mark.. so he gets sort of a rest for the next 8 weeks..
Patrick is still loving it at cal poly.. just finished midterms and did well.. wore his spartan cheerleader costume (the one will farrell wears on saturday night live) to some parties this weekend.. all i need to know about that!...do know that he's been to the beach a few times this week.. the smoke from the fires has made its way near him.. one of his friends got sent home from college due to them (ucsd)...
We are all going down there for homecoming/parents weekend in 2 weeks.,can't wait..
Halloween this week.. wonder how many of the kindergardners will be a power ranger or spiderman! I think i'll skip wearing my costume this year.. a 50 year old pumpkin is a scarey thought!
Deb.. i sure do hope they caught whatever was brewing in your body in record time and that you are feeling better by now.. take some of the butterfinger bars out of the halloween bags and hide them in your freezer! they taste really good a day later! love..mdf

Dear Debbie, It's been a long time, but we lost your site for awhile but found it again. Hope your visit with the doctor on wednesday is productive.
We just got back from visiting Colin at Virginia Tech. We hadn't seen him for about 6 months. Erin is back in the area and engaged and working at the Appolo Grille in Bethlehem. Ryan is a part time broadcaster at Lehigh. He is living at home. Erin and her beau live in Whitehall. An October 08 wedding is planned.
It was great seeing the pictures of you and the gang at the walk a thon. I know you are keeping your spirits up when I see that smile. I will try to write again soon. Love to you and Joe and the family
