Another Trip to MICU

Dear Fod's,

Not a good day for our girl today. I arrived at around 10:45 and Debbie was complaining of a hematoma on the left side of her tongue. She had something that looked like a blood blister the size of a dime on her tongue and she was having trouble swallowing. While her airway seemed clear, her pain continued to increase and she could not take her meds. As you may recall, because of the failure of the central line a few days ago, they moved most of her meds to "by mouth". Today, the mouth was shutting down!

We asked to see the intern and the assigned nurse and their solution was a lidocane mouthwash. While it helped with the pain, it did not treat the problem. Her tongue continued to swell and she was having difficulty swallowing.

Luckily, Nurse Patty from the 6th floor came for a visit and she saw what was going on. She immediately recognized that the lathargic treatment plan would eventually put Debbie's airway at risk. She quickly assessed the situation and like a true "Top" Sargeant she kicked butt and took some names. While not on her assigned floor, Patty made things happen in the trenches! Within 5 minutes the room was filled with HUP specialists who took charge of the situation, administered some steroids, and with consultation with the attending physician, decided to try a medication approach rather that opening an airway. Debbie was scoped by ENT specialists and they felt that the best way to keep an eye on her was in the MICU. While she hates it there, she needs to be there tonight. Today all hats are off to Nurse Patty. She saved the day!

Within an hour, Debbie was talking and her swollen tongue was subsiding. Mike and Laurie were there when they wheeled Debbie from Rhoades 3 to Founders 9. As is customary, we unloaded Debbie's room and carted her stuff off to the car. Later, we visited with Debbie after she was in the MICU and she is continuing to improve. Hopefully, she will be moved back to Rhoades 6 or 7 tomorrow and she can resume her recovery.

Thanks to all for your cards and blogs. When Debbie feels better, she does have some reading to catch up on.

Debbie sends her love to all.

Hey Debbie:

I thought you were working your way toward going home. What a day you have had! Though when Joe mentioned that you were back to talking I knew you were getting better.

Saw that my anonymous group of men from St. Louis wrote on the blog that they are keeping you in their prayers. I think I will keep them anonymous for awhile like Visitor Allison so that the suspense can build a bit.

Just drove back in to STL with Mere tonight to attend mass at the the end of the parent weekend there. Their "Homecoming" at SLU centers around a Men's Soccer game so she opted to come home here to watch the boys play Washington High.

Well...that was not so good. Borgia lost to the cross town rival 24-7. The score is not indicative of the real effort they put forth. Colin was very sad after the game. He even said he should have played harder. What do you expect when you play a 5A school. They had 3 players for every one of ours and most of ours played both way...onto next week when we play teams more our size.

Last night we had dinner out with Mere and Aunt Angie. The boys were busy running around town. She really does look good...and it was nice for us to visit with Mere with Mom there.

All else is the same here. Just getting ready to host some of Colin's classmates here for Homecoming dinner. It's always fun to see what everyone is wearing.

Continue to improve. I will be checking in to see when you get to move back to Lansdale.

Love to all of you...especially Nurse Patty...COD Eileen

Dear Deb,

God! When are you going to get a break???? Soon I hope and pray. I'm so sorry you had such a scare. I too am thanking God Nurse Patty happened to come around. And I'm glad you will be going back to 6 or 7. It sounds like you will be better looked after there.

Bob has an appt. tomorrow in the tower, and I was going to stop for a quick visit. I hope I can see you in the MICU. I miss you Deb. You're never far from my thoughts, and you are always in our prayers.
Praying now for a peaceful, good nights rest for you.

Joe, thanks for writing. I'd be happy to spell you guys and stay w/ Deb. Just say the word. We're here if you need anything.

Love, Mo and Bob

Well, Chiz

All I can do is think about you, Nurse Patty and that Delacroix painting, the Samaritan and seep, seep, seep!

Thanking God for answered prayers and for his gracing your path with enlightened, healing individuals...

I just asked Jess the other day what floor you were on and if Nurse Patty was back and she told me that you were on the 3rd fl and that Nurse Patty wasn't back! Oh Sweet Jesus! Thanking God she came calling today. Hope I'm not out of line here, but I'm starting to think we should be calling her Saint Patty at this point...and Joe, you're probably up for an award or something, too!

Chizzie, my prayers continue for you, Joe and the KODs tonight.

Today, I was rummaging around in my file drawer looking for an envelope and ran across another art memory. It was a print of Renoir's, The Onions, that we saw at the Clark that time.

Remember how it looked so real that we felt as if we could reach out and touch the papery, onion skins? Well, honey, I hope you can feel me reaching out to hug you tonight...

I pray you get some rest and that tomorrow will be a much better day...

And all hail, Nurse Patty!

Chizzie-

Hello my friend. Sitting here, looking out the window and wondering how you're doing this morning. I pray your night was restful and that you are feeling better.

I can only imagine how scary it was for you yesterday. Still thinking about the timely intervention of Nurse Patty and shaking my head. Oh, and seeping.

I continue to pray for you, asking for miracles large and small and for enlightened, healing individuals (aka earth angels) to hover around you. Okay, maybe not hovering - I know you don't like it when people hover over you...(unless it's your Joe ;-)

Well, off to do the laundry and all those chores...but can't do that without the Daily Word.

I'm thinking we could all use some of this:

Inner Peace

Resting in the presence of pure peace, I experience serenity within my soul.

Envisioning myself looking at the still waters of a reflecting pool has a calming effect on me. Even when a wind temporarily disturbs or ruffles the pool’s surface, I understand that the water beneath remains still, and calm is soon restored to the surface.

I, too, have an inner tranquility. Its source is the love of God that is always within me, keeping me serene, secure, and confident when I most need to be. God’s peace-giving love radiates from within me, and because it does, I influence the people around me in positive ways. The more I radiate peace to others, the more it is reflected back to me from the love of God within them.

I stay calm throughout all situations. Knowing that the peace-giving love of God is within all people helps me realize that peace is the reality for all people—here and now.

“Live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.”—2 Corinthians 13:11

Peace be with you, my Chizzie. I love you.

Hi, Just checking in. I'm hoping Debbie had a restful night in MICU and is able to go into a regular room today where she's more comfortable. Of course I like having her MICU because I know she's getting round the clock care but I also know the continous harsh lighting and activity can make you go mad! Looking forward to hearing some good news soon. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
