Weekly Update 10/22

Dear Fods,

Thank you for continuing to post against the old news. It has been another very busy week for Debbie and her support team. Debbie had a Monday, Wednesday and Friday run to the HUP this week again. Fod Edie covered Monday and Wednesday and saw the HUP at their best and Debbie at her worst. Monday was a full day's event while Wednesday was only a 7 hour event. Debbie was so sick on Wednesday that the Lab team took over the meds and made some very sound recommendations and changes that seem to have helped Debbie's nausea and appetite. Fod Kris handled the drive on Friday and again they made it in under 8 hours.

Regarding the drug fiasco, because of the graft failure, we questioned the need to take the anti-rejection drug tacrolimus, which is very hard on the kidneys -- but were told that it was necessary. Well, hours after the last post, HUP called and told us to STOP the tac because Debbie's levels were way too high. She was at 50 and normal is 10! So we stopped the tac and her tremors ended a few days later. This week they told us to stop taking the magnesium oxide because that is only necessary if you are taking the tacrolimus as it facilitates the absorption of the anti-rejection drug! So there was 10 days of taking something that was not needed. On Wednesday, while Debbie was heaving up a storm in the lab, they asked her why whe was taking Zofran? Because it is an anti-nausea Deb says -- they say yes it is, but only if you are on a chemo regime -- if you are not getting chemo, it will make you sick!@@!?? List price for that drug was $4,000! They gave her adavan pills instead and that seems to be working much better for her nausea. Yesterday, I went to fill the rest of the new prescriptions and one CVS did not carry the specialty drug and told us where to go to get it. That CVS looked at the new scripts and said that they would not even fill the order because there is a very serious drug interaction between the four new scripts! They have to speak with Porter himself before they will dispense it to make sure HUP knows what will happen if Debbie takes it with the other drugs!@@!! Finally, Debbie is wearing fentanyl patches for pain management. Three boxes were dispensed with 5 systems in each @ list price of $800. On Friday, HUP decides to reduce the dosage from 2 patches @ 75 mcg = 150 mcg to a 100 mcg dosage. Of course, we cannot use some combination of the 75 mcg patches of which we have 2 full boxes, or even 75 instead of 100 over 2 days instead of 100 over 3 days?? -- we need new boxes of 100 mcg patches! And you wonder about the cost of healthcare?

Debbie is weaning herself off of the pain narcotics, her back pain is improving and she is taking small slow walks around the block twice a day. Debbie usually takes one of these jaunts and is ready for her bed. She is still sleeping 14-18 hours a day, she is very weak and needs the O2 at the slightest exertion. Trying to convince Debbie to eat now reminds me of Jester trying to get Christian to eat. It takes longer to convince her that she needs to eat, then to make a selection of what is there to eat then it takes for her to eat the small portion of whatever she does finally select and agree to eat. We made pizzas for the game yesterday and she did eat a few slices and she was able to cheer for the Irish win.

Debbie is slowly improving and her growing impatience with her slow progress further suggests to me that she is getting better. She wants to do more, but just can't which, in my view, is the improvement. For the first 2 weeks she did not want to do anything at all because of the back pain. Last night, she wanted to know who took care of her during the first 10 days she was home -- which underscores my point.

Monday will be the her 21st day home and I think she will be much better in another 21 days as soon as we get all of these drugs sorted out and her appetite improves. Today's objective is to get a recumbant bike for her to ride in the family room because it will be too cold for her to go outside soon.

Thanks for all of your well wishes and your continuing posts. We all feel your love and support.

Debbie sends her love to all.

OK, I read good things. Deb is still home!! She is gaining some strength; walking around the block, not once but twice; getting a new exercise bike; and has found "CLOD" (concerned lab of Deb's) in her corner. And, Joe, you are right.Another good sign is her lower level of patience ...
Prayers for your continued improvements and recovery.
WIth love, Ruthie

Ai-yi-yi. That medicine business just makes you want to holler doesn't it?

Sooo glad that things are on an upswing there guys. I hadn't seen Deb for a week and when we went to HUP on Friday I could see that she HAD improved EXPONENTIALLY since the last time we were together...

Thinking about your pizza Joe and recalling the pizza bake-offs you, Chris Jensen and Mr. Hal used to have back in South Bend.

Thanks for posting the improvement news, Joe. Give our girlfriend a hug for us. (maybe since her impatience is growing we should call her GRRLFRIEND!)

Love to all - K

Enjoy the color change of the fall leaves with a nice cup of tea and a slice of hot apple pie.

Remember, we are just a phone call away and ready to help in any way needed.

Dear Debbie & all the T's,
Oh my goodness, I want to say I can't believe HUP but unfortunately I can. Here are a couple of things I found out this week as while visiting with my friend who was trying to find relief from nauesea...(1) Motion sickness braclets on sale at any drug store work wonders for nausea! Her Doctor even confirmed this. (2) Freshly cut ginger does wonders when sniffed to relieve the nausea feeling.. this worked for a while, she found relief from sniffing it.

So sorry your progress is slow and tough Debbie, but with the strong team of FOD's and loving family around you to "rattle the cages with the coal shovel" eventually all will be taken care of. The greatest news to keep in mind is you are in remission.. yipee...

My prayer this conference call is for all your meds to be sorted and pain relief found. With my back issues (2 car crashes!), the greatest relief I got was from a Rekki style pracitioner and heat pads. I am all for "alternatives" as additions to conventional medicine - if anything gives relief grab it...

Lots of love always, visitor alison

Debbie & Joe,
We were pleased to see another posting & are utterly dismayed at the lack of drug management on the part of the HUP. We were also pleased to read that Debbie was able to see the Irish phenonemal win over UCLA. It is so aptly described with the adage "the luck of the Irish". Of course Mike is pleased to see the Nittany Lions win another game. Let's hope that the next 21 days provides significant improvement.

..Thanks joe for the update.. any chance of that med for the kidneys could have been causing all this back pain?.Are there too many docs ordering meds without fully reading the charts?? wow, all those wasted pain patches, they don't "trade them in"? well, deb,you got to start feeling better without some of these meds now.. sounds great, the walking around the block 2x a day..remember how excited we all were when you were going out to the mailbox..
well mark and tim will be coming home today, they did well, but missed the playoffs by head to head runs..Patrick needs to write his personal essay for colleges today.. i find that he isn't on east or west coast time..it's patrick's time.. started it yesterday, the battery was low in the lap top. so he plugged it in, then went to the movies.. this will be our second attempt this weekend to get it done!!ONe of his top choices was beaten by your alma mater yesterday..good game,,tried to see penn state game last week, but they showed usc here instead..
deb..stay tough and strong.. eat when you can,, i find grazing all day fun..i bet by thanksgiving you'll be feeling so much better.. love, mdf

Halleluah!

I get all kinds of wild ideas waiting for a post! Improvement indeed. Impatient, walking around the block and looking into biking...I'll say!

News from the Midwest. You no doubt in your sleep heard a big "Awwwww!" when Mere didn't get queen at the homecoming dance. But all is well. She was just thrilled to be on the court. Today she suffered another blow...the senior Powder Puff team was defeated by the the Juniors. A very cold day here but again...fun memories.

Dave and I hosted the 19 seniors last night for dinner. The dresses were, shall we say interesting to say the least.

Special surprise for Mere is that Dr. Raul, Mayra's dad was visiting from Honduras so he was at the dance to see the "coronation". He took lots of pictures.

Bee won his 8th grade football tourney first round game. So he moves onto the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Colin's first official date to Homecoming reminded him why he likes better going alone. He had a hard time staying focused on one girl.

Dave celebrated his 47th birthday this weekend in the midst of all the chaos.

Oh and yes! How 'bout those Cardinals.....YIPPEE! Domers too!

I am looking forward to next weeks blog. I bet Deb won't just be a little feisty!

All our love and prayers!

Debbie,

Thinking of you each and every day!
I haven't been the best keeping up with sending cards, (although I must admit the stamps and the cards that I purchased have been in my purse with good intentions) however the prayers have continued non-stop. Hope you find relief from all the pain and can enjoy nature's beautiful scenery provided by the fall.

Love to you, Joe and the family,
Cindy G.

Hi Deb and Joe,
I was sooooo!!! happy to read your update this A.M. I always get nervous when we do not hear any news for a while. I knew you had to be just overwhelmed with home care. It is tough on all. Glad to hear you are delegating some assistance to our support FODS. Every little bit helps. The politics of medicine will drive you crazy if you let them, don't let them! :) Deb, I can feel the good Lord shining his healing grace upon you more nad more each day, as our prayers get stronger each day. I hope you take a moment to look out the window at the glorious fall day, with the foliage in full bloom. The sun shining down through the color laden leaves. We are up and about and able to take nourishment, and we are not six feet under just yet. We have family who love us, beautiful children who look to us, and friends who support us. How blessed we are to be alive! :)
We love you. Don't give up, and stay in touch.
Artie and Cathy

Great to read the post and it looks like once the meds are controlled and you find out what works, she is on her way. We have a bike at our house that no one is using - it is about 3 years old and has a computer system which measures heart rate, and all - If you would like it, we would be glad to get it to you. Just let us know. Give us a call 215-368-1721. Shelly & Gary Geib

So, sunday evening im watching the world series, when this nice man we've known for years comes to the door." mary, can i talk to you for a minute?" oh no, has to be patrick, cause mark is on a plane flying home from az...he wanted to let me know.. parent to parent, that he just heard patrick yell out the "F" word at an intersection.. he didn't think patrick knew he was in the car...as you can imagine, all sorts of thoughts are going thru my mind.."big deal, he's a 17 y o boy, to Oh, im so sorry" ..figured the sorry word was the route to take..so i apologized, told him the catholic guilt must have warn off of him,and i would talk to him about it.. so, as we were chatting, patrick and his friend drove up..whereas i said "Patrick, you owe mr. so and so an apology for shouting out the f word!"..Patrick started to laugh! then explained that he thought he knew the person in that car,but figured oh well(his son is in classes with patrick).. he then explained that they were singing a rap song by "Lil Jon" and that was the part of the song that is so fun to belt out!" he shook hands and apologized,,and they all talked and laughed for a little while, then the nice man went home..this was the evening where i kicked out all the boys (there were 6 of them here all afternoon) cause i wanted a quiet evening!
Deb, i hope you are getting stronger day by day.. wasn't that a song.. just wanted to write something to get your mind off of everything else for a moment, and to share one of my afternoons/evening with you.. love, mdf
