Post Second Consolidation: Home Again!

Dear Fod's,

Debbie called this morning around 7:30 to announce that Dr. Porter was preparing to discharge her. Her WBC and HMG are normal and she did not have a fever for 24 hours. Although she is still tired, short of breath and with low platelets, they said that she could handle this from home. If she stayed fever free for the morning, they would release her at noon.

I called Mo and told her that there was a change in plans. We had planned on riding the trains today to avoid the Penn Relay Finals -- so we were driving down after all. We took one of the back ways through the city and had no problems either way. Mo went to visit with Dr. Bob and I went down to fetch Deb.

When I arrived at the room, Nurse Patty was visiting with Debbie. She is such a kind soul and really makes Debbie feel better. With all of the discharge paperwork, new prescriptions and fiddle faddle that goes on during a room exit, we finally left the room at about 1:30. We did a quick visit with Dr. Bob and we were on the road by 2:00.

Deb had convinced herself that what she really needed was a margarita pizza from Bertucci's so we stopped at one on the way home. Deb and Reen split the pizza, some salad and bread. Deb was in heaven! We finally arrived at home aound 3:30. Deb sunned herself on the deck for a while and then took a nap while I did the food shopping.

Alli is visiting for the weekend and that made both Joey and Debbie happy. She is a lot of fun to have around.

Unfortunately, the pizza heaven did not last too long and the chemo nausea took charge and Deb is resting in the bath tub at the moment. We may need to start out a little more basic with the food. Nevertheless, Debbie is happy to be home and we hope to keep her here for while. HUP will just have to get along without her for a while.

Deb sends her love to all.

Hi Deb,
Just checking in and am thrilled to see you are home!! Yippee!
We just finished pizza for dinner. There is nothing like a good slice (or 2). The kids all have friends over, so it is a very full house.
Wasn't it just the most spectacular day? Dan played golf and I hung out with the kids and their friends. Finally got a few things done around here, and almost cleared my desk.
So glad you got out of that place, visited with Bob, and had some chow time with Mo. Have fun with Alli and Joey. Sweet dreams tonight...you deserve them. Thanks for the good news Joe!
Love, Kim

Deb:

Sunning yourself...we are in the midst of the 40 days of Noah here. It has rained all day long. We need it but enough already.

We are on maternity watch as "Tequila" is due any day or hour...so Dave thinks...with the weather being so poor she will no likely have it during the rain storms. Tequilla is one of our older longhorns...she pops them out pretty regular...

Today the boys both young and old have been glued to the TV watching the NFL draft. Thank goodness it was raining and they could waste their day in such a way.

Moving piles around the house as we continue to get ready for the now 80 or so folks to arrive tomorrow for our Honduras Brigade Picture party. I took the easy way out on the meat and had the local butcher make pulled pork and chicken so Dave (who is on call) would not have to grill all day. Each of the medical teams is assigned a meal component. As it stands we have more from the yellow team which is good since they are in charge of dessert.

Aunt Angie is coming...she will be a big help. Now send some of your sunshine our way so we can use the patio.

Mere and Colin have three weeks left of school and Bee only four. Still haven't come up with a good time to travel anywhere. We are looking at around the 4th to go to Cincy so that Mere can look at Xavier and U of Dayton. Who knows...it will likely change six times before we do anything. Are you still talking Cosmos? or waiting until the last of the consolidations?

Have to get back to cleaning up my piles all over the counters. I sent Joe the Walgreens Photo Album of our trip to Honduras. Check it out.

Take care and enjoy tonight in your bed....Love to all .... and Alli too. COD Eileen

Oh Debbie,
I leave for a few days and what happens? You end up in the hospital. I could cry when I read the ordeal that you have been through this last week. It just seems like more of the same stuff . . . is it making you crazy? How is Mo holding up? and Bob? I think of them alot. Do they have a blog? I am really out of the loop.

Our trip was terrfic. I loosened up a bit and threw some dice at the craps table. Richard broke even - which is all I can ask. We also drove over to the Indian Reservation where I lived for that year after college. I sobbed and sobbed. And the memories - good and bad - came rushing back. We'll talk . . . .

It sounds like you have a full house this week-end. If you want any company, give me a call. I'd love to visit before the troops come home.

David has pretty much decided to stay at GW for law school. He loves Washington and he will not need a car. The final decision has not been made, but he is leaning that way.

Sarah will be home in a week and I cannot wait. The last time I talked with her, she didn't have time to talk, she was running over somewhere for "penny pitcher night". My kinda girl that Sarah.

Meg is studying hard for her comprehensive exams. She needs to pass them before she can start her clinical rotations. She's cranky. So am I. I have to finish my final exam by Wednesday - UGH! But, I can always make time for you.

So call if you want company.
I miss you.
Susan

Hey Deb,
I hope you slept soundly in your own bed. Although, I noticed that you were up pretty late blogging Bob!
Enjoy this beautiful day! Thinking of you, but I must go, I need to look up the word "libacious".

Welcome home! I'm happy to hear that the counts are normal and your fever is gone. I agree Uncle Joe...HUP is just going to have to live without her for a while. The weather this week should be beautiful, so enjoy tanning on the deck and your whirlpool tub. Relax and recover!!!!

Debbie & Joe,
It was a delightful blog posting, & we are as pleased as we can be for all of you & family that you are home again. We are not sure however that the HUP will be able to function w/o Debbie. The traffic because of the Penn Relays sounds horrific; what a delight to be able to remain home!
We hope that you are feeling better today & that you can remain home in the peace & quiet of yuour own place. We'll have to try a margarita pizza once for ourselves; hopefully it is devoid of any fat content. The other day Mom treated me with a fine eggplant parmesian, & one day we'll have to compare it with your excellent version. A merlot went fine with it. All of our hearts & love are with you; please get better every day so that we can begin planning on the roof top dancing at the shore. Love, Mom & Dad

Hi Deb & Joe,

Gerri & I think of you often. We keep you in our daily prayers. We can't help but feel all will turn out well since you have endured so much and are still fighting hard. In spite of it all, both of you continue to have a sense of humor. Debbie, we will continue to monitor your progress and are looking forward to hearing that you have beaten this ugly monkey.

Take care.

All our love,

I like it.

Ed and Gerri - you have SO hit this nail on the head. I salute you.

Hi Chiz - Hope this finds you feeling better after a nice weekend in your own house and your own bed.

Today was kind of a weird day for us, what with three showings of 12 Pond View and all. We ended up heading out of town on a fool's errand. It's a long story, so I'll fill you in on Tuesday morning when I see you. I hope my slot is still reserved??? If it means taking a road trip down to HUP for blood, honey, I say - let's roll.

Hope you are ready to tuck into bed with a good read and some comfy clean pj's. Talk to you soon. Love you - K

Hey Chizzie-

Just wanted you to know that I followed your lead tonight and at the risk of providing TMI (too much information) to my fellow FOD's I will continue:

Your description of your kind neighbor's home-cooked ribs and your long, soothing, soak in the tub inspired me. So tonight, I took a long hot soak in the tub and then had ribs for dinner - complete with b-b-q sauce on the face. Mmm. Good medicine.

Hope you are having a good night and that you are taking care of YOU! Same goes for you, Mr. Joe.

Thinking of you both.

Dear Deb,

Glad to hear that you are back home and resting. Take care of yourself. I'll give a call this week. Was at the shore this past weekend with college friends from Wheeling. They came in from Ohio, Maryland, and New Hampshire. It was a great time. We had my cousins house that sleeps 18 for 8 of us, so there was plenty of room and could not have picked a better weekend. It was spring festival weekend with craft shows, garden tours, house tours and a margarita machine on the front porch. Next year we are going for four days if my cousin will allow it.
Love and prayers coming your way.

Hi Deb & Joe:

This is Lee Williamson. I hope you are feeling stronger & able to stomach any kind of pizza now. Do they have a "cosmo" pizza?? Thank God you are home to enjoy this beautiful weather. John & I drove to the lake for the past two weekends to get painting & ripping up John's old deck. This weekend's goal is to get our dock in the water & build a new deck at John's house. Has something happened to our romantic relationship???

I sit in the lobby in Rosemont, PA where Barbara has three days a week of "group". She is living with me now full time. Julie is so beautiful & starting on the softball team. I'm glad to have the girls fill my life again but it makes it difficult to get time with John being 65 miles away. Oh well, my problems are small.
Lisa DiRenzo has returned to the surgi-center as our Anesthesiologist. If we could only have you & Mo back, all would be well again. Miss you so much.
Take care & post some really good news soon. Can you have visitors??? Love you, Lee-Lee

Deb:

Sorry I haven't gotten on the past two days. It has been a little crazy (loco) around here. Now I am home from a track meet and getting settled in for more laundry and helping with homework.

Mere did her usual,1st in shot and 2nd in discus...Colin continues on the freshman middle of the pack mode in the field events.

Did my first day of shadowing at the new job. What have I gotten myself in to? I think I was showing serious signs of being a visual learner. I can't have all the documents on the computer. I have to be able to see things and then go to the document on the computer. I think it will all be better after I get through all of it once. Starting out with compiling and publishing the annual report may be putting my feet to the fire but why not just jump in.

Dave is headed to Memphis this weekend for a bachelor party of one of our friends sons from here in Washington. These out of town bachelor party are a little ridiculous. But I am sure they will be fun.

Aunt Angie was close on the party attendance. They are a fun bunch of people. Very easy to entertain.

Guess I have avoided the laundry for long enough..

Love to all COD Eileen

Oy! Hello Chizzie and FOD's -

Just tried to check in with you Chiz and got cut off! From past experience, I know you can feel my phone pain. I'd like to take mine out in the driveway with a hammer right about now.

Anywho, I sure hope you are still coming around. You sounded perkier yesterday - and that's so good to hear. Is it time for a pecker check? (Hah-hah it's been a while since we've had any pecker chat) Are you keeping your pecker up?

I better have mine up when I go to the DMV this afternoon to renew my (expired) driver's license. Ugh. Not looking forward to that. I always end up looking like a convict in the pic they take. Nice.

I'll try to get a hold of you this evening again. Did you get to watch American Idol???

Love you, honey and still sending prayers. K

<3Eileen - man, I never met a cliche I didn't like! I was especially tickled when I knew the first one right off the bat(see what I mean about that cliche thing?), since it is something I have been muttering to myself since my (brief)stint in Job's Daughters. The version I mutter includes the phrase: "which highly adorns women"

Off to snoop and see what I can find...

Cliches are like crack to me. Here you go, <3Eileen.

From Random House:
In nature, neck has referred to any narrow strip of water, ice or trees. So, originally, neck of the woods meant a stretch of woodland.

Sometime in the first half of the 19th century, people started referring to the settlements in remote wooded areas as a particular neck of the woods. The first print evidence of the expression is in 1839: "In this neck of the woods" (Spirit of Times 15 June 175/2, 1839).

In a book of Americanisms, De Vere writes about the American pioneer: "He will. . .find his neighborhood designated as a neck of the woods, that being the name applied to any settlement made in the well-wooded parts of the South-west especially" (Americanisms: The English of the New World, 1871).

Today, the expression is alive and well in almost every neck of the woods, though it no longer solely indicates a remote settlement. Neck of the woods now refers to any neighborhood, area or region. It is sometimes shortened to neck as in Wainright's Devil you Don't: "In this neck, I say what. I also say when."

... Al Roker faithfully uses the expression to introduce the local weather every morning on the Today show. When asked why he picked neck of the woods as his send-away expression, Al says, "Well, my grandfather used to say it, and I use it every day as a tribute to him."

Running out of patience (and time -the DMV is calling) to track down 'patience is a virtue'. I do have this for you though...

Breed it if you can,

Hah-hah.

Deb:

Once again...we are saying grace at dinner and came to the end and I said, "Debbie, Debbie, Debbie" and Bee goes...she called...I said what do you mean, she called! Woe is me. You caught me out picking up Colin from track as Mere had to run to work after practice.

Thought of you lots today. While at Weight Watchers they told a story that made me think of you.

"Debbie woke up one morning with only three hairs on her head. She looked in the mirror and said...I think I'll braid my hair today." I look great", Deb said. The following day Deb woke up and found only two hairs on her head. "Hmm, today I think I'll part it down the middle." "Wow, how I like that look." The next day arrives and low and behold she is down to one hair on her head. "I really wanted to wear my hair in a ponytail" said Deb. "I look like a cheerleader. Day four arrives and Deb wakes up to find no hair left on her head. "Yippee" Deb exclaimed. "I won't have to do anything to my hair today."

And that is just how our Deb has been ~ All about attitude!

Hang in there sweetie. Tomorrow I have Mothers Day mass at the grade school @ 8:15. I'll be on my mobile after 10:15 EST 314-922-4324.

Brendan mentioned you asked about Tequila. I just made Dave go out and look at all my irises in the garden. I bought a slew of them 2 years ago at a bulb sale. This year they have gone wild. In turn he drug me out front to examine Tequila. Her udders are still pretty lose but she is showing other signs that make us believe it could be soon.

Went over to mom's today to help her order online a shower and wedding gift for friends of our's son. She had printed the wedding registry from Crate and Barrel. How's that for one groovy 80 y/o.

Hope to catch up tomorrow. Keep that chin up! You are a great role model for all of us out here in blogland.

Love COD Eileen

Hey Deb:

Just read FOD Eileen's blog...Wonderwoman I am not. Texas Longhorns all 9 head are very low maintenance, especially with birthing. I can remember being at my cousin's in Belvidere, NJ one summer and watching a calving that they had to assist. We just wake up and other on is out there. They are really no trouble. Then we watch them grow with fascination. They really are cute. It was either the cows or a sports car or maybe a blonde. The cows were certainly a better mid-life crisis for Dave.

Thanks for letting me know that Deb is at the shore as I left a message at the Lansdale address today.

We do have to get up to PA this summer and you can meet the hip Aunt Angie. It's just finding a weekend and having it fall when Deb is feeling well. I got so lucky to see her back in March. She looked fabulous.

Now for Deb and Joe...Mere and her girlfriends are held up in the basement getting schoolwork done...or so they say...Colin is parking cars at Cinco de Mayo at a local Mexican restaurant and Bee is singing in the shower after a scrimmage game in baseball. He made a nice double play.

Have a marvelous weekend on Asbury Street...wish I were there. Tell me that Mangia's is open now.

Sleep tight...soak up the sun. COD Eileen :)
