Special Guest Posting # 6

And now here she is live from Rav 9 -- Heeeers Debbie!

Hey Everybody,

When I woke up this morning, I had a cold and a runny nose and a loose cough. I thought YIKKES, this is it. "0" wbc and a cold -- just what the doctor didn't order! So I started pushing fluids and doing laps.

The nurse practicioner came in and was very concernced and that we the last I saw of her. She ordered another antibiotic #4 to cover a fungal pneumonia.

As reported in yesterday's blog, we were scheduled for the bone biopsy this PM. Joe was scheduled to come down by early afternoon to help me through this barbaric practice. However, early in the morning, they changed their mind and decided to do the biopsy in the AM, because they now wanted to do a CAT scan and chest X ray in the afternoon. So about this time, I am getting a little anxious about going through this procedure alone, and then to be lost in the labrynth of HUP. But I forgot to tell you that they pre-medicated me with ativan and dilauidid for the biopsy -- now I am getting loopy with the drugs and then they decided not to do the biopsy after all.

Then Dr. Porter appeared (from behind the big curtain of Oz) and said that we do not need to do the biopsy because we do not need this information at this time. [What does he mean that we do not need the information??? -- That is what we are all looking for!!] What has since been explained to us is that they are going to do the biopsy as an outpatient -- which means he will do it -- after my numbers recover. They believe that a post-discharge biopsy will give a truer read of the extent of my recovery. They are expecting no leukemic cells.

He also explained that no matter what the results of the biopsy, they would not put me through another round of induction chemotherapy anyway. He said that I had handled everything that they had thrown at me and that I was doing fine. So we are taking this to be good news.

But they did go forward with the CAT scan -- no results yet, but I do not think that it is in my lungs yet, but they are being very cautious with any kind of cold with a 0 wbc. Joe was with me for this and was prepared to wheel me back to the room assuming that Transport would not arrive for at least an hour or so. Our Transport guy did great today and was there as soon as the procedure was done.

Once back in the room, I had a mac and cheese and made Joe get me a soft pretzel from the hotel gift shop. Yes girls, this is a 100% carb diet -- whatever I want, I can have!

Then dermotology came to my room to do an inspection of my rash. They were all excited at such a fine disply of skin misery and desperation. It is not every day they could find such a fine specimen of flaming, watery rashes. They did two biopsies, complete with stitches in order to rule out a skin infection. We will find out in about 1 week what this was all about.

Then we went back to boring old laps around the floor. I cannot wait to come home and it seems now that it will probably happen in the middle of next week. Although we will not have any information about what is next, we will simply hope for the best and take it one day at a time.

So again, thank you thank you for the continuing onslaught of cards, gifts, blogs, and well wishes. I feel so loved from all of you guys.

I love you all.

Debbie

Deb:

Sounds like that is good news. At least no bone marrow test! Possibly going home in a week sounds even better. Sounds like you will need to behave between now and then though. Are you capable of that?

The spring like temps of yesterday are now a thing of the past. Back down to the wintery cold and yucky grey skies. Thank heavens that our new baby "Star" has fur. Dave said they are forcasting colder than normal temps for February and March. We are so overdue for some serious snow. I would like at least a day of it.

Ran by Aunt Angie's to drop off some soup. She is a gem. I had picked up a journal for her and she was showing me last years. She wrote in it every day. Funny how you forget things.

Always in our thoughts! Love...Cousin E

Hi Debbie,
Told you God had to listen to all the ear bending. Sounds very positive and so do you. We'll still keep pestering the Big Guy for a full recovery!
Hope you sleep well tonight.
I have been remiss in not mentioning that we also keep Joe and the children in our prayers.

Deb~ I am so glad to hear things are looking up! I know you can't wait to get home. As homey as your house is I can't wait to be there either.
Things are going good here I am very busy. I start back to school today for semester 2 of Respiratory Therapy. So far I really like it and I know you nurses cringe when they hear that but so far so good. However when I start clinicals next week I will let you know how I feel then. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever finish. You would think after 5 years of college I would have more to show for it! I guess thats what I get from changing majors. I think I am finally on the right track!!! Who knows maybe some day when you are old and grey sitting on a rocker somewhere with mom I will be there to help you all out for once!
Anway I am glad to hear you are doing ok except for that nasy rash! And if I ever hear of my patients being left anywhere they better hope they never see me again! What patient care! Anyway I love you and tell everyone I said hello and love them too!!

Hey, Deb!

What a roller coaster ride! good news won out in the end, tho', not to mention you got some good chemistry out of the deal! Ativan, versed, & dilaudid are my top three favorites. (That's the left-over ER nurse in me talking).

So happy to hear you didn't have to go through the Bx. And the Doc sounds hopeful. Way to go! It'll feel so good to be home next week. Take care of that resp. thing so it doesn't delay your discharge.

Lotsa love and continued prayers, Mussie

Woo Hoo! Sounds like good news. Glad to hear it. No biopsy today and you got to enjoy the "buzz" from the meds!

Hope antibiotic #4 does the trick and you get well enough to go home soon!

You know, Deb, you've just got to be the bestest patient that HUP has ever seen. You handle every ball they throw at you with hardly a blink of your eye. I can't imagine any of the FOD's handling this whole obscene event better than you have--we are all so proud of you, girl!

I join the masses in cheering you back home! You can't imagine how hard this will be for all of us to give you some space--Nazi Joe will have to post a schedule of visits on the front door, sort of like Martin Luther's on the church door.

And you can have as much mac n cheese as you want when you get home, although I think Mary just might find time to make ravioli?

I'm feeling better today, I should be down on Wednesday with Mary.

Love,
Cathy

Woo-Hoo!

What a roller coaster ride you had today, girlfriend!

You are a Goddess to me!

First of all, I hope that your fluid regime and lap regimen are helping you with your cold sx.

Thinking of you there, going through this and I keep chanting our number one shopping mantra, do you remember it? "Keep moving like a shark" (cue the Jaws music in the background)

Secondly, I am so glad you were able to dodge the drill bit for a time! Praise the Lord and pass the Apple Butter! Blueberry Muffins on the breakfast tray and the transport team even smoothed your healing path today! I love it!

Third, you got a free shot of Dilaudid and Ativan on the house - hope you toasted Dr. Pearl and also hoped it helped you cope when the dermatology crew came in and chiseled away at your rash. Did you feel like a prize pumpkin at the county fair? Leave it to you to develop an award winning rash.

Unbelievable.

Fourth, did Doc Porter actually swoop down on you today just as they were preparing to drill your hind end? It sounded quite dramatic and very Marcus Welby MD-esque. (Hey FOD's-remember Dr. Kildare? How about Ben Casey M.D.? And don't forget about that old chestnut, Cherry Ames, R.N.?)

I am so grateful and glad that Doc Porter gave you such positive news. (Note to self: Make sure that Porter is on the refreshment menu at the Cosmo Bash for people who enjoy a taste of the brew-including Mr. Joe.)

Keeping the vibes flowing and the candles burning for the CXR and CAT scan results, Chiz. We're just saying no to fungal pneumonia and saying yes to atavan and dilaudid. heh.

(SO glad to see that Mussie and Cousin Cindy are also proponents of the Better Healing Through Agressive Pain Management School of Thought. We'll make sure they are on the refreshment committee for the Cosmo Bash.)

Speaking of the Cosmo Bash, I've been working my fingers to the bone stitching all those little pearls on the 'I CONQUERED ANOREXIA AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT' shirts for the bash. Where are all those stitch-happy dermatology med students when you need them?

Okay - I'm almost done here, but since we're on a mac and cheese trip. I have to say that I saw Emeril throw together a scrummy looking mac and bleu cheese the other night. He tossed the bread crumbs w/ a little EVOO before sprinkling them on the top and popping it the oven. It looked divine!

For some reason, I am also channeling rice pudding. I don't know which FOD is heading down to the Penn next but please take down some Kozy Shack rice pudding for Debbie. It just came to me and since my in-laws came down with some kind of bird flu when we were all together over the holidaze I am giving our gal Chiz a wide berth and can't do it myself.

Speaking of pudding. Mo, I hope you will join me in taste testing the high carb recipes for the cosmo bash menu. First up is the pudding who shall not be named. (Hint: With all the talk about peckers and our dear Chizzie's rash this pudding is very appropriately named.)

I love you Chizzie! I love you FOD's - if you keep all this how great thou art stuff up you'll turn my head. You're too kind. I feel so much love for you guys. What blessings my friendship with Deb brings to my life. Isn't she just the best?

Keep the faith everyone.
K

Well Debbie, what can I say except THANKS BE TO GOD and all the FOD that hung in with all their prayer chains. You are in all our hearts!
I talked to Jenny Dunlap and she'll be sending you a note along with her prayers.
I don't know your friend KMCLAY, but she sounds like great fun. I can add a few medical icons to her list -- how about Trapper John or, who else remembers this one but me:Janet Dean, Registered Nurse? I also used to watch 'Medic' with Richard Boone doing the narrations.
I do hope you'll continue to fight the good fight and come home feeling well and happy. Let me know what I can do to add to the up-coming bash your girls have planned. I'm with you all the way.
Jimmy and Jared send their love and prayers as well
GOD BLESS YOU!

AAAHHHHHH...light at the end of the tunnel...what a beautiful thing!! It was wonderful to read your message Deb. I could also hear your chirping voice as I read it ,which made me have a stupid smile on my face that I'm glad the kids didn't witness(why give them more ammunition?).
Chicken soup, mac& cheese, whatever it takes to get you out of there.
What with the menu shaping up as it is for the cosmo bash, I bet it could even coax MDF out of sunny CA??
Hey FOD's, do you think the pudding is any relation to the brownies we used to make with the ingredient that also can't be named??
Kris, kept up with most of the med show references. But, RJ, you lost me on the Janet Dean ref. Now, I guess I'm showing my age??
Keeping the prayers going to get you out of there and back home where you belong. Love, Kim

Debby and Joe,
How nice to see a 2nd Special Guest posting in the last 3 days which we deem as a sure sign of your growing stronger. We look forward to seeing Special Guest postings daily! Let's hope that the Nurse Practioner who was so concerned not to show up again was correct in ordering the proper antibiotic. The re-scheduling of the biopsy was puzzling as were the words of Dr. Porter, so let's hope that the staff is on top of the situation. We were pleased to see the cat scan was taken & in particular to see that the "overnight delivery" transport team made it into the "same day delivery". As you can sense, we don't have much confidence in this aspect of the hopsital staff. Let's hope that all continues to go well & that you'll be back home soon. Love, mom and dad.

DRUGS ARE US!!! that's what I always say(now who could that possibly be ,says Debs??) ..oh, you know the queen of vicodin..but I positively love ativan..,dilaudid too in a pinch, at least you could have an afternoon of relaxation w/o the needle..for you FOD"s that don't know me, I'm not a drug addict, just recovering from nasty back surgery...What great news to hear that next week may be THE WEEK ...we all know that no admonitions are necessary concerning what you will be doing once you get home..right?...RIGHT???..Joe can put a comfy chair for you at the slider in the kitchen,so you can read in the sunlight, and gaze out at that beautiful back garden and lovely little creek of yours..it sounds idyllic(one of the things I like best about being in your home) my new visualization of you is now complete!Beth's comment is to my left as I type this .."tie you to a chair"..just popped out at me ..I think I'll put that into the visualization ..just in case... not that I don't have confidence in your ability to just sit around and DO NOTHING or maybe just RELAX...you can do it I'm sure. Maybe Doc Porter decided you didn't need the bonemarrow done now because HE wanted to be the guy to do it (with you as an outpatient) to spare you from another nurse p assault..whatever the reason it sounds like a better plan to wait a bit and let you settle down..I'm so glad for you...how is your back by the way??? it seems to have been forgotten in the melee ..I hope because it's not really bothering you.Well my girl keep stuffing that Mac and cheese down your throat ,it sounds like the answer to many a prayer of mine..does your rash hurt or itch..or is it just bothersome to look at?? all in all I hope it goes away soon along with the "cold" which I hope just stays a "cold"...did anyone give you chicken soup yet??? the famous 4th street deli probably makes a mean one...anyway Debbala got to go now ..prayers love and positive vibes all coming at you :)Bev
