Day 33
After I left last evening, there was a tense moment when new Dr. Pearl wanted to move Debbie to the step down ICU unit for closer observation. Dr. Debbie informed Dr. Pearl that she was not leaving her room and that she was dehydrated and needed fluids. He was to hang the fluids and leave her alone! When they hung the fluids, Debbie improved immediately and Mike came home last night around 10:00. Debbie did fine during the night and she had an OK day today. She was up and doing laps on her own this morning, although the rash is still boiling. As was the case the last time, she is now taking on the fluids in the rash and she is "filling up" again.
Deb also has been having problems with her eyes this time and she was taken to the eye clinic this afternoon for an inspection. She has some burst blood vessels in her eyes and a scratched cornea. Apparently, this is because she was so dehydrated.
When I arrived at about 4:00, she was not in her room and had left her room at about 2:15. When they told me where she was, I suspected that she was most likely parked in a hallway somewhere waiting for the infamous "transport" team to arrive. Unfortunately, no one on Rav 9 could tell me where the eye clinic was located after a few minutes of waiting, I went down to the information desks and started asking questions.
Sure enough, when I found "Gates 2" there she was. FOD's what a pitiful sight! Parked against the wall, IV fluids drained and empty, pumps shut down, little blue hat over her bald and slumped head -- waiting -- for one hour in a public waiting room to be wheeled back to her room. Absolutely attrocious! We took matters into our own hands and began the trek back to Rav 9. We rigged the pole between the feet of the wheelchair and Deb held the pole. I had the wheelchair and her huge chart as we made our way down the halls. While I was pondering how to get this rig up the escalator, a transport person appeared and she knew this picture did not look right. She acted as our guide and she directed us through the HUP hallways back to 933. Needless to say, Deb was exhausted when we got back to the room. She went straight into bed, the fluids were restarted, platlates were hung and she received 2 units of blood.
There is money to be made here in a private transport service. This could be like the private water taxis in Venice. You can take the public transportation that will take 2 hours for 5 euros or get there by private water taxi in 20 minutes for $100. There is definitely a market here.
The boys arrived about 30 minutes after this disaster. Had they been there earlier, we would have solved the escalator problem with a brief protage up the steps and over the rail. While Debbie slept, Joey took a nap on the recliner and Mike and I went to CHOP to experience the great cafeteria all the nurses have raved about for the past month. When we found our way to the CHOP entrance, a CHOP Rambo Security guy asked us our business. When we informed him that we were there to try the cafeteria, he informed us that we were only allowed on these premises for "official" business and eating in the cafeteria was not official enough. We were rejected and we tramped back to the slop shop and did the best we could.
When Mike and I got back, Deb had recovered and was sitting up in bed and enjoying the company. The temp. that had been at 100.3 was down to 98.4 and she was doing well. Her dinner came and got the "ugh" so the boys were free to eat it up and that they did. I expect by now that she has turned back about 80 of the 99 meals that have come her way. Can you believe that? Deb had a mac and cheese for dinner, which now seems to be the dinner of preference. She ate the whole thing again, which compared to last time is very good.
Deb had a nice visit with her boys and she laughed and laughed about the dumb stuff that they do which Joey can imitate in a hilarious way. We had to send them both home before Deb blew a gasket from laughing.
Deb seemed fine tonight and we set her up with a movie that should take her into her bedtime. Since she looked fine when we left and I will save the overnight until it is needed. Hopefully, for both of us, that it will not be necessary.
Deb sends her love to all.

Oh my gosh, what an experience you are all having--at poor Deb's expense. Deb, I'm sorry I couldn't be with you today, I seem to have caught a cold and I certainly can't expose you to that. I'm taking all kinds of homeopathic remedies, hopefully I'll be all clean by Monday and can visit with Mary.
Joe, Mike, and Joey--what a fun group you are. Keep Deb laughing, I believe it might be the best medicine of all.
My love and prayers are always with you.

Dear Chizzie-
Un-freaking believable!
The things you see/hear when you don't have a gun. I bet you were wishing you could draw a bead on that young Dr. Pearl last night.
We won't even mention that scene in the Eye Clinic. I'm wondering if I should bake you a cake with a Glock in it or something. Wave that around a few times. That would get those folks hop-singing around there!
Thank goodness that Joe and that enlightened transport person showed up when they did and hustled you back to your room!
I'm beginning to think we need to get you some big hunky bodyguards (ala Lindsay Lohan and Brittany Spears) to escort you around that joint.
We could get a couple of mean dudes, dress them all in black with mirrored sunglasses and bluetooth earpieces and station them outside your room. They would become your companions as you wend your way around the rat's maze.
They'd be able to take care of that little problem over at the CHOP cafeteria, too.
Think about it. I know you didn't want sleepover buddies but these guys might just come in handy.
Sorry the rash is such a pain. I keep trying to think of something soothing to try on it. Aloe vera? Or would that burn like hell? I hope they gave you some nice soothing drops for your eyes and that you are enjoying your movie.
Love you honey-
K
Dear Debbie and Joe
WOW Debbie you are incredable!
Way to go.
I watched the Rose Bowl the other night stayed up late again to watch the Longhorns beat SCU.The Quarterback with the help of his teammates won the game in the last 30 seconds.Vince Young was unreal.
I am so glad your sons are with you, and of course Joe.
God bless you all.
BIG HUGS Your Aunt Angie
ALL MY LOVE
Deb - I marvel at your strength! With everything you are going through to be able to tell that Dr Pearl oou are not leaving your room and you know exactly what you need is unbelievable!
Then to be able to laugh and enjoy the company of your family after your experience at the eye clinic is tremendous.
I've wanted to give you some movie ideas and since Joe wrote that you are watching a movie tonight I thought I would give you some of our favorites! If you haven't seen it, "Best in Show" is terrific and very funny. It's a spoof abut dog shows. I could watch "Something's Gotta Give" with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson a million times (I want her Beach House!). "Ray" is excellent if you haven't seen it. Jaime Fox was amazing as Ray Charles. Speaking of Jaime Fox he was really good in "Collateral" also. A classic is "Fargo" - how can you not laugh at the guy sticking his friend in the wood chipper as the pregnant sherif comes upon him in the woods by the lake! William Macy is great in that movie. Macy is also terrific in "The Cooler". He plays a loser who is employed by one of the old gambling houses on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. He comes in when people are winning big at the tables and they immediately start losing their money. Alec Baldwin really steals the movie - he plays Macy's friend and manager of the casino where he works. Hopefully you haven't seen some of these movies and will be able to enjoy watching them.
Joe, Joey and Mike - you guys are so great! Joe thanks for keeping us up to date on what our dear friend Deb is going through. Keep plenty of mac and cheese on hand!
Sleep tight Deb, get your rest,
Love to you and yours,
Paul and Barb
Hey Mrs. Teklits!
Thank you sooo much for the call a few nights ago! It was a wonderful suprise for my mom and I! And here I am--a bonafide West Virginia University Mountaineer. At the book store, my dad was all ready to stock up on brag tags and hoodies, but I told him we better wait a semester... seeing as his previous Siena College investments have gone done the tubes. I already feel at home here and I am really excited to explore the town! Unfortunately, my tour guide (and boyfriend) is in some far away state playing ice hockey and won't be back until Sunday morning. I have iced heart-shaped cookies waiting for him! My parents left a few hours ago in absolute shambles. My mom might have to give YOU a midnight shout out! I won't lie... I teared up too. Only a robot could watch their mom cry and not cry too!
Minus today's fiasco, it sounds like you are doing well, but I never know what all this doctor lingo and numbers mean! All this eye business sounds so messy! I hope they are going to be able to fix it, but it seems as though you seem to come up with a solution before your doctors do!
Three men of the cloth, a Catholic, a Jew and an Episcopalian were on an airplane trip together. They ran into the worst turbulence in the history of aviation on the whole flight.
When the plane finally landed, a reporter is there and starts interviewing people. The first one is the Catholic and when asked was he afraid, he answered, "I am Catholic my son and
yes, I was afraid but I prayed to my God and I knew he would see me through it."
The reporter said thank you and went up to the next man of the cloth and asked was he afraid, he answered, "I am Jewish my son and yes, I was afraid but I prayed to my God and I knew he would see me through it."
The reporter said thank you and went up to the third man of the cloth whose clothes were all messed up, wet streaks down his pants and chunks on his chest. He was asked the same questions and replied, "I'm an Ecopalian".
The reporter says, "Ecopalian, what is an Ecopalian?"
And the man of the cloth said, "That's an Episcopalian with the piss scared out of him!"
I am always always always thinking and praying for you! Stay strong!
Love, Sarah Schneider
Hi Deb-
Hope your sleeping tight tonight. It was kiddie day at MSC- they were all cutie's today as usual. It's been fairly busy there and all the doc's ask about you all the time. Also Max is leaving us and heading to GVH, we are really gonna miss her. Hopefully Dr. Lisa hangs in there!!
My Mom has not been feeling well lately and had a acute episode of SOB this AM. She went the ER where Jilly was her nurse, thank you Jill!!!! They kept her for nebs, etc. She seems a little better, but grumpy!!
Nikki is leaving for Florida tomorrow for a week, lucky kids!!! Widener offered her a teaching job again for this semester so she is excited about that.
My recent trip to NYC with Missy was interesting, more on that later!
Well Deb keep fighting, keep all those Penn doc's in line! Let us know when your up for some company.
Also Kate had a great time with Christian, let her know if Jess needs help!
Love, Holly
Hey Deb:
What an adventure you had today/yesterday? Thank heavens Joe came to the rescue.
Bee had a game tonight which they won...2 point spread. Tomorrow they will play for the championship against a much more accomplished team. We are expected second place. Mom (Aunt Angie) will be along on that one. These past two have been too late at night.
Colin is at a surprise party for a female classmate. Mere was kind enough to watch Bee play tonight. She's a keeper. Friday night and watching your brother play 7th grade bball. I think her girlfriends were going to see a scary movie. She hates anything with too much suspense.
Think about you all day long. Keep up the strength. Love Cousin Eileen
Deb,
I hope this gets to you, I'm a little confused with the blog, but caught this email address (p-pop's). I just learned of all that you have been going through & just wanted you to know that my thoughts & prayers are with you & I know that you are going to do great. All of the girls at SPU say Hi & get well, Love, Becky Holsonback
Debby and Joe,
We couldn't help but smile at your "standing down" Dr. Pearle, & it appears that the entire UP staff needs a refresher course in the control of bodily fluids. We are saddened by the re-occurrence of the rash & the accompanying fluid build up. What an awful experience that must have been waiting for a "transport team" to arrive. With all of these blackberries, * other technical communication devices so readily available, must a so called advanced care facility such as the UP still use the "holler & echo" capability used in the Middle Ages? We sure aren't very impressed with the UP after reading that input! The input about the CHOP shop experience was hilarious to read but couldn't have been very funny to a pair of hungry tigers. After reading constantly about the poor food, poor control of fluids, a rotten transport team, cave man communications capabilities, will some please tell us something good about this place? We were delighted to read that the boys had Debby "in stitches", & that a good old mac & cheese dinner "filled the bill". We can't wait for your coming home & leaving that "hell-hole" behind. You continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. Love, mom and dad.
HEY DEBBIE!...I am so glad to hear that you are doing better... Atleast that is what is sounded like to me....I got sort of nervous when one night mom told me that you did not have that great of a day and that the rashes were back. OH well, i know that you can beat anything. The other night my WHOLE family was up watching the Penn State game. We were all so nervous the whole time. It went on way past my bedtime but i had to watch it. We looked for Mikey but did not see him. I hope today goes welll for you... Love Meredith
Mrs. Teklits-
Sorry for your experience at the eye clinic. Way to go with Mr. Dr. Pearl, sometimes it takes an ICU nurse to tell a doc what to do!! I think about you every day even though I don't get to read the blog every day. I check on the blog a couple times a week. Glad you got to see Jess and C again, I know that is some of the best soul medicine there is! Keep strong as you head into the coming week, I'm praying for you every day.
