Day 28 -- A New Year
Deb and I had a nice evening after the posting last night. We did a few more laps, had some ginger ale (did I say ginger ale??) and were putting the lights out around 10:45. They hung the chemo early and it was done by 11:00 and the nursing staff pretty much left us alone for the evening, except when the IV alarms went off. That happened about 3 times throughout the course of the evening -- and not for any reason you nurse buggars might be thinking about!!
Deb rested very well last night except for her bathroom breaks, which are no small feat, i.e., get out of bed without tangling your IV lines, unplug the IV machine, traverse the room, open the door, turn on the lights, wheel the contraption into the bathroom, perform, catch the output, measure the output, record the output, wheel the machine back across the room, replug the machine, back into bed with untangled lines, and back to sleep. We did this exercise once every two hours or so. Deb is pretty good at it -- of course I was stumbling and tripping behind here with the plugs and the pole, but we did not have any mishaps. No wonder the poor woman is tired! Add to this the fact that Deb's room overlooks the heliport (white light -- red light -- white light -- red light -- all night long) it is a sureal experience.
The recliner was a cross between Premium Economy and Business class. Unfortunately, it was made out of some cheap leather substitute, and even with a blanket and sheet underneath, I was sweating for most of the night. Deb on the other hand was under a sheet, blanket and top blanket and said that she was cold! But on balance, I got twice as much sleep there as on the overseas flight and felt OK for the rest of the day.
Deb did her morning routine, i.e., hot bath with the Donna TeaBags towels, while we made up her bed for tonight. This bed making ritual consists of an air mattress on the bed, a fitted sheet over the air mattress, a blanket folded in half to counteract the rubber of the air mattress, another fitted sheet to hold the bottom sections together, a sleeping sheet, one sleeping blanket and then a top blanket - now from Carole Ann and Becky. By the time Deb finished her bath, I was in another full sweat from running around the bed creating this sleeping pyramid!
We had breakfast together and did some laps before I left for the day. Shortly after I arrived home, Jester, Pammie and C were on their way down to the hospital. They were able to visit for about 1.5 hours and C did a great job. He was in Debbie's room watching one of the Baby Einstein movies on the DVD player while the girls visited. Deb was very happy for this special time.
When Jester was leaving, Joey and Allie were coming up and they visited for another 1.5 hours. Deb had a lunch of Mac and Cheese (from home) and she did some more laps. Considering the circumstances, Deb had a very good New Years Day.
Mike called from Miami -- he is having the time of his life, but cannot believe how expensive everything is. He told me $50.00 for one round of drinks (notice not food) for 5 people. I am sure that he will be crabbing for lunch in a day or two unless he can meet up with his Uncle Rick.
Debbie has a full schedule for tomorrow and we hope that she continues as strong as she has been so far for round 2. If there is going to be another "dark time" I am guessing that it will come toward the end of next week. I will keep you posted.
Deb sends her love to all.

Wow, it sounds like you two had a much more exciting New Year's Eve than I did. Most of the kids were here for dinner, and assumed positions on the couch waiting for the new year. By 10pm, they'd all given up and gone home. So there I sat with Jim (who had already slept on the living room couch for a few hours) watching poor Dick Clark try to enunciate the words so that we could understand. Other than wine with dinner, no alcohol. I guess I really am old.
I can't believe you've been gifted with Christian's company--how special is that for a grandmom? I bet you're pinching yourself black and blue!
Keep up the good work, sweetie. If there are dark times coming, please let us help. You know you could have a bus load of friends there by just snapping your fingers! Love you,
Cathy
Hi Debbie:
It was so neat talking to you today.when I called you on your cell I didnt let it ring long enough to leave a message.I didnt realize it. so you wouldn't know I called you yesterday. Dum Dum
God love and take care of you.
BIG HUGS Your Aunt Angie
P. S. Joe you are so funny!
Hi Deb- Happy New Year and here's to better times in 2006. I'm so glad you had a visit with Christian today, I'm sure that is some of the best medicine you can get.
Tom and I had a quiet NYE at home- we had a nice dinner and I slept thru the movie- business as usual. Nikki had Morgan and Kate to her place for NYE- they all had a great time. Kate is looking forward to staying with Christian- I'm sure he will keep her busy.
Well I made it thru the week at MSC without Deb, we had almost 40 cases in the 4 days- it wasn't pretty but we all survived.
Morgan and I are headed for a day of shopping in New York City tomorrow. I am treating Morgan to celebrate her law school admission. We are going with Missy-who knows what kind of clothes we will come home with. I'll show up at our next get-together in fishnet stockings and snakeskin boots- haha!
That new doc sounds great- keep a hold of him. Take care my friend- and you know where to find me when you need me! I think of you all the time. However I'm not sure how Penn would ever recover if they ever saw all of us in Dr. Denton's!!!! Sleep tight.
Love, Holly
Hey Debbie..... I hope that today was a good day for you. I had a nice New Years Eve but could not get off my mind that i had to be at work at 8:30 this morning... that was not too fun.... I came home again and took a nap to make up for being up late last night... When i was awakened by my brothers quiteness( which i think they get from my mom and nonnie(aunt angie)) my mom told me that she was on the phone with you. It made me really happy when my mom told me that you sounded good. I will be thinking about you as this week goes on. We start back to school on Wednesday which is a day or two after everyone else. Can't wait to go back... not.....I hope that everything goes well with you this week and that only good things happen... Happy New Year to you and Joe....LUV YA
Hi Deb! I just wanted to shout out "Happy New Year!" to ya.
It was good to read that you got to be with your grandson today. Doesn't he just make everything right? I spent this last week with my little Jimmy. He went home today and our house was just too quite. We called Pauline and Craig to ask if he could stay another night. My husband is going to pick him up right now. I just love being with him! He says the cutest things and makes me laugh. I have to tell you his latest ~ Pauline and I were in Walmart and they have these cute round pillows in the prettiest colors. He tried to say, "they look like cottonballs." but instead he said, "They wook wike cock n' balls!" We laughed and laughed. I chuckle now when I think about it.
Well, Jimmy just came in and I MUST love on him. Hope you have good memories of today with Christian that will keep you laughing. Can't wait til I read you are going home!
Love and Prayers,
Carol Johnson
Dear Deb,
It sounds like you had a very nice New Year. It is 4:30am and I am up roaming the house. New Years was nice here. I had Mom, David, JoAnn, and Scott (my nephew) for the Eve. We had munchies then Surf and Turf. It was a wonderful evening and I even made it to see the ball drop. That has not happened in the past few years.
I am so happy to hear that you were able to visit with Mr. C. It must have been the out of this world to have him hanging in your room. Hope that your are sleeping well. Your Joe is very special. Keep strong. Love you. Don't forget those massages I promised once you are home and feeling up to it.
Good Morning Deb,
Hoping that you had another good, uneventful night. Although the way Joe described it, it sounded busy..he totally cracks me up. Your day yesterday sounded full and happy..perfect. We never left the house yesterday. I finally made xmas dinner, since Dan is now recovered from the flu??
Thankfully, noone else got it. Billy barely made the bus this morning. I knew it would be hard for them today, but also thinking..Yippee!!
Have a good day. Hope Dr. S stops in again---"You gotta believe"!
Always thinking of you. Love, Kim
Happy New Year!
To all the Teklits Family! GO STATE!!!!! Ryan can't wait any longer to see Penn State play. He is having withdrawl. He plans on doing the play by play right in our living room. Dad gets to do te color comentary! Its a shame the orange bowl had no room for the College radio stations, but thats the way it goes. :)
Joe you crack me up! Your such a good winer! You know it reminds me of a joke! One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm, a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn the lights off when he asked with a tremor in his small voice, "Mommy will you sleep with me tonight?" The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't dear," she said. "I have to sleep in Daddy's room." Along silence was broken at last by the same skaky little voice. "The big sissy." :)
I'm so glad you were all together for the holidays. The "BIG DOC" has good things to say and you are holding your own. Deb, your no "Sissy" Hang tight!! Cathy and I send our Prayers and Love. God Bless! Talk to you tomorrow! Love Artie. :)
Debby & Joe,
We were pleased to read that you had a reasonably pleasant New Years Day, & we'd like nothing more than the same continuing but your being at home & healthy. On our way to Alex's 4th birthday party, we stopped in at your place bringing some food items along from both Grammy & Jeanne & chatted with Joe for a bit. While there we got the opportuniity to see Christian yesterday as they were bringing him from seeing you at the hospital, sound asleep, as well as an opportunity to chat with both Jessie & your sister Pam. Both looked well, & it was nice to have an opportunity to speak with them. Here's a note from FL; Rick & Mike have been chatting & they'll attempt getting together either at the pep rally this AM, or at the pre-game activities tomorrow. Shane seems to be having a great time with all of the activites going on & enjoying the company of his dad. Rick was interested in the contents of the latest blog & we summarized it for him - he sends along his best wishes for a Happy, Healthy New Year. Artie is right, with most of the family being ardent PSU fans, with one notable exception, a ND grad!!, we all "bleed blue". Seems like we'll need a big win to finish atop Texas & LSU in the rankings. Please know that you remain paramount in our thoughts & prayers, love, mom and dad.
Hi Debbala and everyone ..your day sounds wonderful..full of love and happiness..despite those pesky pumps and machines..the pictures are so vivid I feel like I am right there with you..in my heart,I am..Happy New Year to you all..Nancy sends her love and prayers ..she was trying to call you but told me to tell you she loves you and is thinking of you freqently throughout every day..in case she didn't get to you in person..we laughed again about the "pecker" she says it sounds like you're doing a jolly good job of keeping it way up!!..that is an absolute truth ..your beautiful smiling face speaks reims ...take care lovey ,stay happy and strong love to all especially you :)Bev
Hey Deb, missed talking with you yesterday.. just actually hung around the house and watched football with tim,and ate.. loved the bathroom story and can totally picture it thanks to joe.. too bad though that its such a hassle,,
well, tim is on his way home from work already.. doesnt' want to miss the Notre Dame game..
I decided to clean out my fridge this am and since both dogs were watching me i figured "Yea, they can eat this, and that (easier than taking it out to the trash on this rainy am).. then i decided to fold laundry, as im doing that i hear Pongo(our "special" dalmatian) having a drink out of the toilet..then he lays down at the top on the stairs..without any warning he throws up and all i can do is watch it cascade down the stairs like a waterfall,Now mind you, i can't get really mad at him cause its sort of my fault for giving him left over turkey, steak, cinnamom rolls,cookies.. To try to make a long story short , i guess i'll be bisselling between the rose bowl and the Notre Dame game...DEb, this is the same dog that hides in the backyard in the winter behind all the leafless bushes and trees..I say"Where's Pongo?" and his tail wags cause he is so happy that he is "hiding" from me, all 85 lbs of a white dog!
So, hope your feeling well today glad you got to visit with your grandson yesterday... don't wear yourself out though... i'll check in later. Go Notre Dame! mdf
Hi, Deb!
RJ hooked me up with this site. It's great! You look and sound wonderful for all you've been through. Friends and family and prayers make such a difference, don't they? I check in every day and I don't think an hour goes by that I'm not thinking about you. Thanks to Joe and Jess for keeping everyone updated. It's fun for me reading notes from the old (really old!) ICU crew, too. Is that Mary Day Hubbel? With grown kids??? Wow, it has been a long time! Of course, Matt's married and Kate's in Grad School. And look at your beautiful, grown children. What a blessing!
I've been praying fervently for you ever since i found out. Can't get you off my mind. And, I put you on the prayer list at church, so that you have a bunch of Mennonites pulling for you too.
Blessings for health, healing, comfort, and a speedy recovery.
With much love, Mussie
Hey Mussie, yep its me, not only do i have teenage boys, but im married! good to hear from you, jean, ruth, linda,mo, even Kim!..all the old nph gang! when i think of that job, i always picture deb wearing her uniform with a smock with a red and white shirt under it, doing her charting and swearing up and down that she was loosing her hair, breaking out, and that she had braces on at her age!(Did you have braces too!) Anyway Deb, you made it through those times..you'll make it through these also.. hang in there! You sure have made an impact on alot of people over the years! Where's guzman when we need her to see Dean Martin walking by??mdf
Hey Deb:
So good to hear your voice yesterday. It was just what I needed to start the New Year right. I was thinking before you called that I could hear you as I was reading the Special Guest Posting. Funny how that is.
Aunt Angie was pumped up by your call as she worries about you as you know. She always has....
Just had one of those visuals of you in our side yard in Kentucky when you were 16 and had your hair done to go out to dinner with Mickey. And I also remember making taffy...what a mess and ironing your hair. With a real iron...not one of those nice contraptions they have today.
Anyway...I will heed your suggestion on waiting to come visit. But seriously I can get on a plane and do some relieve time. My kids are pretty self sufficent on short stents away.
Hope that the larger dose doesn't take you physically as far down as it did last time. Heck without the rash it has got to be a little better.
I will check the new posting to see how you are feeling today. Love to all...Eileen and fam....
Hi Aunt Debbie
Happy New Year! I'm so glad you were able to see Christian, who is just the cutest kid ever. I would love to visit you but we all have colds over here so hopefully we can see you soon. You are much loved and missed by all of us and you're in our thoughts and prayers.
Lori
Dear Deb,
It was great to finally get the appropriate info to connect with you and family... (Hope you received my snailmail letter last week. )
Went with Joe and Connie to visit Ocean City for the New Year, and I specifically visited to confirm that all was well at your house. The church sits there watching everything just for you! (can't you just hear the "signature" vocalist/organist!!?)
I think of you so, so often-- Keep up the good work. It's a gift to have Joe and Kids and Christian around.
Some day we'll chat.
Could bore you to tears! (or laughter)
For now, get strong, and eat those Big MACs!!
Love to you... Lizzy
Hey Deb,
I remembered you just as MDF described you too. However, I'm with you on this one Mo--I didn't follow that last comment of hers either--thought I missed something.
Hi Mussie...thought I saw you driving on Forty Foot sat. when I went to visit my Mom and Mo--strange?
When you get yourself outta there
Deb, we could have a great party/reunion. Looking forward to it.
Looking forward to Joe's entry as well. Hope your day was a good one.
Sweet dreams. Love, Kim
Dear Debbie, My entire family and I love you so much! I still believe in miracles. I'm praying to Pope JOhn Paul to intercede for you. Deb We're all here for you.
Love, Mary
