Day 45

Great News today: Deb is coming home! Her counts jumped dramatically from yesterday, wbc to 3.5 and ANC over 1,000. The day was kind of a roller coaster. When we first spoke this morning, Deb had a bad cough, pneumonia still an issue, but she had one of the best nights sleep she had since being in HUP. She ran a little temp. during the evening and she had some terrible coughing jags when she got out of bed and my impression was -- yukko, another same ole same ole day.

Next, I get a call around 1:00 and in the middle of a meeting and Deb says that she will be coming home on Saturday. Great news, even though we are wondering, what about the pneumonia?? The cough?? We are currently on all of these special meds?? What is going to happen when we come home?? Shouldn't we watch this for a day or two??

When I arrived, Deb had been visited by the "discharge" unit and she was scheduled to leave tomorrow! Not Saturday. Deb said "WAIT A MINUTE. HOLD ON. I AM STILL SICK!!" Needless to say, she was fuming at the thought of being "unplugged from the IV's" and rolled into the Avalon for the trip home. She wanted a day or two of observation, with everything unhooked to see how she is really doing on her own.

Deb wore herself out fretting over the potential discharge decision and she took a short nap until Dr. Porter arrived. When he did, she asked all the right questions and Dr. Porter said, "your counts are fine -- almost normal. You are fighting the pneumonia on your own and your wbc will probably handle it. We aren't treating the virus, that has to run its course. You can be sitting in the hospital with a fever or at home with a fever -- we aren't doing anything about that fever. But I still want to make sure that this fever is not related to the leukemia. When I am confident that it is not, you can go home."

We think this double speak means Friday at the earliest and Saturday at the latest. But the big suitcase is in the trunk of the car in case it means tomorrow.

Dr. Porter wants to see Deb in 2 weeks for a bone marrow biopsy and a CAT scan of her lungs. The bone marrow will tell us where we are with the leukemia.

Deb is still very weak and we are both wondering if she has the strength to get up the stairs to her bedroom. Once she gets back into the house and we understand what she can do, we will let you know. I suspect that she is weaker than we think since she has been in an essentially "bed ridden" enviornment for the past 6 weeks. Hopefully, we will be able to whip up her favorite dishes and build her back up quickly. We are hoping for good times now!

Deb sends her love to all.

My Mom is 1/2 way done her radation treatment and is feeling good. Great news all around. Love Ya Jenny

Deb:

This is really great news!!! However, I am sure if must be scary too! When you are home, I am sure you will feel much better--you can be on your own schedule and not the schedule of the HUP staff! Take care and continued prayers for you and your family.

This is so weird. I just posted a couple of hours ago and you potentially had pnemonia...now you're coming home. Way to go! I can understand why you are a litle nervous about the sudden change, but I hope everything works out and you can come home by Saturday.
I haven't seen you since Gram and Grampop's party, but would love to see you as soon as I know I won't get you sick.

YEAH!!!

Love,
Lisa

Phew!

How do you spell relief, eh FODs?

What a glorious day today was, Chizzie-

It was so great hearing those counts this morning and seeing the happiness in your face. I thank God for this news.

It sure sounds like events picked up steam after I left. Is your head spinning? Have you had a chance to catch your breath yet?

Called to check in with you tonight but lines were busy... I bet you've been burning up the minutes tonight!

Sweet dreams honey. Pretty soon you'll be snuggling in your own bed. Sleep well, keep the fevers at bay and I KNOW you've got your pecker up!

Love you - K

Deb,

Heard alot of cheering and hollering outside and had to check the blog to find out what all the noise was in the neighborhood. All of Tennis Way is celebrating the homecoming of their FAVORITE neighbor. Can't wait to look across the street and know that you are finally safe and sound in your own home. Way to rebound!!
See you soon! Karen & Bob

Yippee!!!!...And Oh, No! Wierd how when what you've been waiting so long for finally comes, it scares the **** out of you.

Like getting married, or having kids. And look how great that turned out for you! Stick to your guns and don't let 'em kick you out 'til you're ready, but, boy, once you get home, it'll feel so great! And look at all the help that's only a phone call away!

Speaking of which, I don't work until 3:00, so if you want some company or nursing care in the am or early afternoon, count me in. I promise I'll let you rest if you want to, or we can talk all day.

Mo, I'm with you on the mdf thing. Someone mentioned awhile ago that they hope she comes for the cosmo; that she sounds interesting. Are you coming Mary Day? I'd love to see you again! 'cause you always were alot of fun to be around and sounds like you haven't changed!

Well Deb & Joe, what wonderful news! I'm so happy for you! Continued prayers and blessings for the next phase of your journey. Love, Mussie

GOOD MORNING!!!
So happy for you Deb. There's no place like home....
I would be honored to take a shift if needed (I'm sure I'm a little rusty, but bet I could get the wrinkles out of those sheets just like the old days). I'd be scared sh**less myself to come home after 6 weeks!
Looking forward to catching up soon. Love, Kim

Dear Deb,
Hooray!!!! You'll get better once you're home, home is a healthier environment than a hospital. I'll be really working on the Big Guy upstairs that in two weeks the test will show remission.
You are a strong, positive woman that helps for a good outcome. Hang in there.
Love,
Pam K

Hi Deb,
GREAT NEWS.... I am so happy for you, Joe, Jessie, Joey & Mike. I could hardly believe the turnaround from yesterday's blog. I know your strenght, courage and strong will got you this far and will continue to on when you get home. You've been gone so long that it's understandable to be a little nervous but the home surroundings will be a great boost to your spirits. I know the boys can't wait to see you when you are up to it. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love,
Dick

Well Folks!
As they say from the booth "AND THATS THE BALLGAME!" (wait a minute though, it may be a mirage!) :) Great job Deb. Demand your time to transition. They where able to get a bed for the downstairs when I came home . It could be a short term option for you. Now you need to to hit the trainers room to soak some of your wounds. Take it easy! Cathy and I Thank God for your progress! We love you and are so happy for you. You just let us know when you are ready for some company from Center Valley and we're there. :) Love Artie

Debby and Joe,
It was a delight for us to read, & re-read the latest posting. This post rates both a "HOORAY" & a "WHOA NELLIE". Hooray that Debby can now see light at the end of a never ending dark tunnel to go home, but some restraint on the part of the UofP that Debby is well enough to finally go home. You've been a true warrior for so many cataclysmic days & we just couldn't be happier for you & the entire family. We'll call Joe & make sure that we can be of some assistance when you get home & situated. Love, mom and dad
