Day 41

Sorry FOD's -- but it is "same old same old." Deb had high temps all last night and did not sleep well. The care continues to be excellent, but everyone remains puzzled as to why Deb keeps spiking these high temperatures.

When I arrived at about 1:00 today, Deb was resting but was scheduled for another chest X-ray. Our friends in Transport found the most indirect way to get to the X- ray department possible. I was ready to board the train at 30th Street! I know why Deb hates to leave her room now. She kept looking up at me wondering, "where is this woman taking me?" Of course, she was new and was more lost than we were. Eventually, we got there and we were again parked in and amongst the sickest people I ever saw. We thanked our Transport person and then moved to the hallway to await our turn, and when it came the X-ray was clear. We did not wait for Transport to reverse her course. Rather, we did it ourselves and were back in the room in about 1/10 of the time! I know there is money to be made here.

Like yesterday, Deb had her breathing treatment shortly after 4 and then got an awful raging fever again. I wonder if this is connected? It was 104.8, she got the shivers, we got the ice bags, etc. etc., it is just a mess when that happens. They gave her a cocktail of stuff and she was prettty much calmed down within an hour. She was then just sleeping on and off whenever they would leave her alone.

All day, I think she ate one small can of peaches -- so this is day 2 of no appetite.

When I left, she was resting, but not sleeping, and pretty agitated with the whole thing. Of course, no one can blame her. Hopefully, Deb will turn the corner soon. She can use a break.

Deb sends her love to all.

I think of you often and check the blog everyday now that I know about it. Hang in there, the experience is like a rollar coaster ups and downs. You have a great support group that is willing to help you back up after the "rides" down. Saying a prayer Jenny

Well, I'm watching skating - hope you are too. Here comes Sasha Cohen. (Makes me miss Michelle Kwan.) There are questions about how she will do because she has spent part of the week in bed with the flu.

In bed with the flu? You could sure give her a few pointers on being sick in bed, for crying out loud.

It's snowing here and I'm hoping you can look out the window and see all those frosty flakes coming down. I know how you love the snow - maybe thoughts of it tonight will help keep your fever down.

I 'm with Mo - I hope this is the last of the bad time. May tomorrow be brighter and may your move to your new room be easy as pie. I'm thinking of you honey.

Love ya - K

So sorry sweetie that things aren't getting better as fast as you deserve. I'm just praying that tomorrow is a better day, and the day after that even better.

I hope you're still keeping your journal, I'm sure you'll have a best seller on your hands when you publish. It's been one hell of a ride, Deb, but it will be worth it when you're on the beach with Christian and Emma. Keep fighting, honey. We're right here if you need us.

Love,
Cathy

Debbie:

I am getting the chills just thinking about a 104 fever and having ice packs. Oh how that must feel but I guess you take relief at any cost.

Spent most of yesterday in the upstairs hallway where we have a window seat bookshelf that was loaded down with books. That took most of the day as I found myself drawn to Mere's room which was stuffed with all her junk and dust. She is a piler. So we reminisced as we looked at the books...nature books galore...that would be Colin and for Mere all these girlie books and Bee likes just about everything. They would tell me which to keep..some for the oddest reasons.

So for today the window seat looks all pretty. In Mere's room I think I unearthed two years of clothes stuffed in this rattan chair she has in the corner..."I was wondering where that was?" And of course she snuck off at one point so I could get the job done for her.

Our now one week old calf "Star" is all spunky and acting like she is 6 months old. The wonders of animal life cycles. How they can walk and eat all in one day and now she is running around.

Aunt Angie joined us for dinner last night out with friends and off to the public school tournament where the kids team, St. Francis Borgia was in the finals...against a team from St. Louis...our enrollemnt 647..theirs 2100..We won! It was a barn burner. Our point guard scored 43 points. Mom loved it. She loves going to those games.

Of course you should know that we all talk about you throughout the night. I think we may even be seeing who reads the newest blog first. She has been beating me lately as my new computer carrier is giving me fits....I think it may be operator error. Nothing that can't be fixed.

I miss you bunches and wish that I could do some relief time but understand you wanting to wait. Work on your appetite so you can eat some Nonnie cookies.

Love to Joe and all...Cuz Eileen

Debby and Joe,
The latest posting, accurate as it is, was not what we desired to read for your sake. You are being put "through the wringer" but we think that you, supported by a marvelous family, are on your way to beat this thing, and it couldn't occur soon enough for any of us. It seems like the Transport operation of the UofP is a mess. I think they need Larry to come down there for a day or two & along with some GPS devices & Blackberries, he'd have them properly equipped & organized. As unbearable as this experience has been, don't let it get you down. We're all praying & petitioning the "heavy hitters upstairs" that "enough is enough" & to end this agony soon. Love, mom and dad

Wow, this really sucks! But, touché to 'winds of change' and 'new room, fresh start'. May I add 'three's a charm'? third day of this doggone fever. Time for a turn-around! You guys must be so tired and frustrated. Keep hanging in there and let all the prayers and good thoughts carry you and cool you.

Glad to hear about the nursing care. Don't always hear that about city hospitals. But you deserve the best after all the years of great care you gave.

On a lighter note, I went skiing the other day - first time in about five years. Yikes! Fell within seconds of getting off the lift. Felt like that old lady in the commercial - 'I've fallen and I can't get up'. Thank God for gortex or I'd've been soaked. It did get better, but only after a couple of headfirst slides down the hill. Last run of the day went really well and I hope to try again next week. The aches are starting to subside now.

Well, hope the image gave you a chuckle. Laughter is good for stimulating the immune system. And hope the image of the snow helps cool you down.

Lots of prayers and cool thoughts comin' your way. Mussie

Debbie,

I know it's so rough right now, but there are so many people prayering for you and your family and i KNOW that you are going to get better soon! This fever is going to go away and in no time you'll be up and walking 20 laps! I saw this joke today and for some reason thought of all you NP nurses, so I thought I'd share:

A few days before his proctological exam, a one eyed man accidentally swallowed his glass eye. He was worried for a while, but there were no ill effects, so he forgot about it.
Once he was in the doctor's office, the man followed instructions, undressed, and bent over. The first thing the proctologist saw when he looked up the man's arse was that eye staring right back at him. "You know, " said the doctor, "you really have to learn to trust me."

Get better Debbie, we love you!
All our Noon prayers...
Meg Noon

Another rough day! When will this finally end? I hope they are pumping you full of vitamins and watching you to make sure you don't get dehydrated again. I agree that it really does sound suspicious that the breathing treatment seems to make you worse rather than better. I wish you could have found out about all of your allergies before all of this! I really hope your WBC count is increasing so that your body can fight this.

I hope you are able to get a good night's rest and I'll be looking forward to a better report tomorrow!

Love,
Lisa
