Day 12

Thanks to all for their posts today -- everyone knows how hard yesterday was for Debbie and today was a better day.

Joey and I arrived at about 3:45 today and Deb was resting in her bed. She was in good spirits and ready to laugh. She was eating well today and the lower regions were cooperating for a change. She was doing her laps and Joey took her out for two workouts today. I counted at least 5 laps, which means we did 8-9 Debbie laps.

Deb's counts are way down, which is to be expected. .8 WBC, <8 HMG, <10 platlates. She is still very susceptible to any type of virus or infection, but within her very controlled environment she seems to be doing fine. Obviously, the comment "doing fine" must be put into context. In normal times, this woman would have been in hyper drive at this time of year, wondering if we should have a Christmas party, how many parties were we going to, how many trees we should have, what about the 85 Santas perched on all of their places, etc. She has not once complained about missing any of this (and could you blame her!!) and is determined to see this thing through. She is a real Trooper.

Speaking of Troopers, what we were calling a "rash" is a cross between third degree burns and leprosy! It is absolutely terrible ( so now we know that Deb really is allergic to penicillin!). She is accumulating a lot of fluid in the area of the "rash" and they will likely start some type of treatment for this bad development. This condition extends from her armpits to her hips and is fluid filled, raised purple blotches. I put some steroidal potion on these areas tonight and I could feel the heat from her skin even through the gloves. The boys and I will probably need to fashion a fine Missouri mustard root poltus to draw all of this fluid off in the next day or two.

Deb had an appetite for dinner and dug into a bowl of Mary's meat balls, of course while looking at her hospital tray. The state of the hospital food is simply incredulous to me. It is so bad that we are encouraged to bring our own food in from home. We even have refrigerators and microwaves to accommodate this shortcoming. It is as if HUP have resigned themselves to their inability to prepare food and they encourage a "work around" with home food to get by. While looking at their TV today, I noticed that they did not have the Food Channel -- perhaps a suggestion in the right direction?? They could do with a little "BAM!" Nevertheless, we have a nice supply of beef stew in the fridge in case Deb gets hungry tonight, and we are making pulled pork sandwiches for tomorrow.

Mike will be coming home tonight and he will visit Deb for the first time tomorrow. This will be difficult for him. Joey will speak to him tonight to help him along.

Deb has 20 pages of blogs to read her way through and she keeps all of the cards and emails handy to read over and over when she can't sleep at night. She feels you around her and we are all thankful for the support you have given us. The boys are particulary thankful for the food packages that have been arriving and are being devoured just as quickly. The chicken parm is gone already!

Deb sends her love to all and we hope for better days.

Hey Mama,

I know we just got off the phone - but with this pregnancy brain of mine I've decided to write whenever I have something to share with you - I'm still not used to the idea of not being able to pick up the phone and call for advice 5 times each day. Did I tell you Christian broke my 'm' key? I have to hold it down very hard to type any m's. I had let him play while I was on the phone yesterday so it's my fault...I just hope Walid can fix it soon.

So I made a batch of your chocolate chip cookies and I can't figure out why mine taste so different. I omit the salt and use Crisco, which I thought you used to do in the old days. Dear Shelly has rubbed off on me and I actually used a cookie scoop to make perfect round cookies...except the cookie scoop is really an ice cream scoop so the cookies are about as big as Mrs. Fields. So I only got 18 cookies out of a whole batch...I had to sample one to make sure they tasted OK, and of course Emma has always enjoyed chocolate in some form or other for breakfast. So we had chocolate chip cookie with our hot chocolate. Of course I ate my obligatory bowl of Kashi for breakfast first. Bet you don't miss Kashi at all, do you?

By now your crew has probably finished running their tests on you. I hope they've got you set up nice and comfortable by now. Walid is headed out with Christian to run some errands and pick up goodies for his parents who arrive this evening. I will call you once we get them settled at the apartment.

Have a good visit with the boys today! I'd better get started on this epic document that is due on Monday AM. Good thing I don't have to type any more M's.

Love,

Jess

PS. Kate C. we got your cards yesterday and Michael A. is your spitting image. He looks like a little doll in his birth announcement. We're so thrilled for you.

PPS. Smith, save the hallucinations for Deb! She could use them right now!

PPSS. Too many "m's"

Deb, I'm happy to see you had a better day yesterday. We're all hoping and praying each and every day gets better and better. Joe described you as a "real trooper" and he is so right. Ruthann and I plan to visit you once your numbers improve. As a nurse, you know how important it is that you are not around anyone who could infect you. Joe is doing an excellent job with the blog. See you soon. Remember, once you are home, we are going to have to take you out and make up for that poor hospital food. John and Ruthann

Chizzie-

I have tried posting here three times and all three times I've been knocked off line and lost the whole darn thing!

I think my computer has caught your rash!

Which sounds dreadful, honey. You know it's bad when a Missouri Mustard Root poultice sounds like a good thing. Hope you are feeling better today and that your rash is subsiding. This gives new meaning to the phrase "Don't do anything rash."

I love you.

Hi Joe. Hi Jess. Hi boys. Hi FOD's. I better sign off before I get knocked off and lose this again.

Kris

i finally learned how to use this! Sarah's home from med school and showed me how to send messages. We've been keeping up with your progress from the beginning and our thoughts and prayers have been with you from day one. Speaking of sarah, she came home this time with all her doctor toys. She's been poking and prodding our ears and eyes, taking our blood pressures and lecturing us on anything and everything. We've taken to hiding !!! Hope they find something to help with your rash, take one day at a time. Love, Bob and Lorraine

Hi Aunt Debbie!

I'm happy to hear you are feeling a little better and that you are able to be more active. I hope they are able to clear up that rash for you. It sounds very painful!

I'll be sure to check ebay to make sure Uncle Joe isn't selling your Santa collection. I'll also be on the lookout for roaming Santas around Lansdale. It sounds like they're becoming quite a nuisance, latching themselves on to shopping carts and everything. I was at the mall the other day and saw a Santa hat with braids attached. I was tempted to get it for you, but wasn't sure if it would bring germs with it.

Sorry about the "m" key, Jess. I shouldn't have been blabbing your ear off! Good luck with everything and I'll call you soon!

I hope you have a great day with your boys!!!

Lisa

Hey Deb & Joe,
You know, yesterday it was "the lower regions" and now its "Santas" (who knows how many!) This material is so good Joe, you will be able to take it on the road after all of this is over. Debbie God Bless you, you are doing great. Hang in there!! So the Kid is home for the Holidays. Thats the the lot of them, unless there are a few we don't know about. :) Hope you got our package. It is time to pump up that Christmas Spirit. I am going to talk to Chef Erin Chadwick, and see if she has any ideas for a good Holiday "BAM!" Cathy will be blogging you a little later and she has a "HoneyDO" list for me to work on so I'll write to you tomorrow. I pray you may have a better day and a Happy Day! Love Artie

Debby & Joe,
Here's our 2nd attempt to forward a quick note. We were delighted to read that you had a better day yesterday, & that you were able to do 8-9 laps. Joe's description of the "rash" is grotesque but probably still doesn't adequately describe the discomfort it has caused for so many days. We suggest that Joe forget about the "Missouri mustard root poltus" & continue concentrating on making you more comfortable & keeping the family strong. Mom thinks he's doing a good job doing both. Yesterday mom said that "her mom said" to forward something to you that perhaps will add to your comfort; said parcel should arrive sometime late Monday at the R building. The vitriolic barrage on hospital food continues unabaited & yet again, it isn't doing adequate justice (or unjustice) on it's taste. It's reminding me of the USAF "grub" that we were fed for 4 years that was described as food. Perhaps one day we'll have the chance to compare memories of bad food. We hope that today will be another day "logged in" as a good day. You remain in our daily thoughts & prayers,
Mom & Dad

Hay Deb, So glad to hear you are feeling a little better. Sounds like your boys are taking good care of you. It's time now for that rash to take a hike. Enough already!!!
I'm trying to bake Christmas cookies, but this is the second year in a row that my mixer dies before I am done. Artie is looking on the internet to buy me a Kitchen Aid so maybe that will last longer than one batch of cookies.
We are going to see Trans Siberian Orchestra tonight at Wachovia. I'll tell you about it tomorrow.
Take care and continue to get well.
Love Cathy

Hey Mrs. Teklits!
I am totally addicted to your blog! I especially like it when it says you're doing better (i.e. today.) I've been cramming for my first bout of finals and writing final papers like crazy. Those papers would go a lot faster if I would stop e-mailing the rough drafts to my mom... she finds every mistake! I go home in two days and I still can't believe you're not going to be there!! So, stay strong and get better! Here's your joke: John invited his mother over for dinner. During the meal, his mother couldn't help noticing how beautiful John's roommate was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between John and his roommate, and this only made her more curious.

Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between John and the roommate than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts, John volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Julie and I are just roommates."

About a week later, Julie came to John and said, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the beautiful silver gravy ladle. You don't suppose she took it, do you?" John said, "Well, I doubt it, but I'll write her a letter just to be sure."

So he sat down and wrote "Dear Mother, I'm not saying you did take a gravy ladle from my house, and I'm not saying you did not take a gravy ladle. But the fact remains that one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner."

Several days later, John received a letter from his mother which read: "Dear Son, I'm not saying that you do sleep with Julie, and I'm not saying that you do not sleep with Julie. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her own bed, she would have found the gravy ladle by now. Love, Mom."
I hope tomorrow is just as good as today!
Love, Sarah Schneider

Debbie:

Day one of Nonnie cookie preparations are through. Chocolate are now prepped waiting for the icing or "icning" as aunt angie call it..tomorrow. We made enough for my brothers and of course for you. I did give Mom a "sangwich". The pickle was a little extra...Haha.

Brendan won his game. Now we are headed to a dirty Santa party. I didn't know he was dirty. I will write more tomorrow after we start the white cookies.

I also need to find some Missouri root for you. Didn't know we had that out here but I would love for you to get some relief from the rash. Ouch.

Take care and love to all. Cuz Eileen
