February 7th Update

Dear Fods,

I know that it has been a while since the last posting. Things had been going well since Christmas and we were settling into a somewhat normal lifestyle. I had been going out to breakfast with FOD Marian, Eileen and Susan on Sunday mornings, seeing movies with the family, and even going out to dinner! On January 27th, Dr. Porter even told me that I was in remission and to do whatever I wanted to do -- even go on a trip. I was going to physical therapy 3 times a week and things were turning around. On Wednesday, I stopped the antibiotics and steroids and by Friday I was beginning to feel miserable. Sinusitis and abdominal pain began coming on with a vengenance but with no fevers I thought that I had pulled something in PT. There was pain on both sides of my ribs and I could hardly move and my head was splitting.

By Monday afternoon, I was very uncomfortable and not able to take a deep breath anymore and the sinusitis was in full bloom. I knew I should go down to Penn, but instead went to see my family doctor on Tuesday who could order a CAT scan and blood work. Of course, when she saw me she thought that I needed to be hospitalized immediately. I was running a fever, my heart rate was rapid and I could not sit up in the chair because of the abdominal pain. We went to the Grand View emergency room and had the CAT scan and blood work -- after 9 hours -- which suggested that I either had a bowel infection, colitis, or ischemic bowel (low blood supply to the bowel) so I needed to be admitted on Tuesday night for IV antibiotics and further observation. They did consult everybody, oncology, surgery, GI and ENT. On Wednesday and Thursday I was very uncomfortable and by early Friday morning the pain was unbearable. The whole right side of my face became swollen and I could not swallow. Frankly, the docs were not sure what to make of me and my condition.

The abdominal pain by this time had slowly gotten better. So Friday morning, the oncologist suggested that I go back to HUP because he saw 20% blasts in my blood which means that the leukemia was back in my blood and in full bloom. Luckily, he gave me a high dose of decadron (steriod). Within 3 hours, once again, the miracle of steroids took hold and I was significantly improved. I was transferred by GVH in time for a Friday rush hour drive in an ambulance ride down to Penn.

We got to Rhoades 6 at about 6:00 PM and our special friend had a very spacious corner room waiting for me. Oncology and ENT saw me right away. ENT probed my sinuses for what seemed like hours and they are pretty sure that it is a bacterial sinusitis. The whole right side of my face was swollen and my eye was red and very painful. They added a few new antibiotics and increased the decadron. Slowly but surely, I am feeling better.

Later today, I am having a CAT scan of my abdomen done to see if that has resolved itself. It was most likely some type of an abdominal infection. We just got back from the opthamology department where they dilated my eyes and checked my eye pressures. They think that the eye problem is an inflammation of the actual eye, but because I am on so many heavy duty antibiotics there is nothing more they can do except for wetting drops. Unfortunately, there is more hearing loss and it is very difficult to hear normal speaking. There is still no hearing on my right side.

The oncologist at HUP said that my blood looked clear today <2% abnormal cells. She said that the GVH oncologist probably saw more blasts in my blood because the bone marrow was working overtime to fight the abdominal infection and was putting everything it had into the fight. So that was good news. She did not see the need for a BMB (thank God!) and I should be out of here on Monday or Tuesday.

Sorry for the delay in posting. Joe will keep you all current while I am at HUP.

Love to you all,

Debbie

Well Debbie...

I am been checking the blog since ysterday when Mere (who is in Spain tells me that the status on Jessie facebook lead her to believe you were headed to HUP.) She of course got pretty fretful but I assured her you were ... what are you....yes....something else! That you are!

So glad to hear you responded to the steroids. Wow! from 20% to 2%. Bring on the 'roids! I am hoping that the docs stick to the Mon/tues departure from HUP so you can be home with your sweetie for Valentines Day!

We are all well. I can't remember what I have and haven't told you in past blogs. Colin has signed to play football at a small liberal arts college in Kanass. Benedictine College. about 4 hours away. Bee is driving! And Mere ... well she beat me to the post so you know how she is.

Glad to hear you are doing well. Give your family a hug from all of us! Whip Rhoades 6 into shape...I can't imagine what they must think of seeing you after your October stay.

Love to all! Miss you more than Mere...hehehe COD Eileen

Oh Chizzie-

I knew when I didn't hear from you last week something was up. Like TravelinGirl09 I checked Jessie's facebook page and got the news that you had run into a rough patch again.

Ain't this just a kick in the pants!

I hope today finds you feeling better and that the Monday-Tuesday time frame holds for your discharge home.

I'm still praying for you, sweetie.

Oh, Deb! Glad to hear the remission's holding and you didn't need a BMB. I'm always thankful when there's no new posting on the blog 'cause I figure it means things are going relatively well. Hope you're back home tomorrow!Steppin' up the prayers again. Love, Mussie

Oh Debbie - I was so surprised to see a new post, but that excitement ended as I read it. I hope you are feeling better today and on the mend again. It was great seeing you at the Clubhouse II that Sunday - I was telling everyone how great you looked. I know you will pull out of this and be back to your old self soon. No need to ask - you are definitely in our prayers. Come on you can do it. Love Shelly

Oh nuts. Hang in there.I know everything will be better again.
Art and I spent the weekend in Atlantic City. We had a great time. Chubby Checkers did a show in the Hilton. Normally wouldn't have thought about seeing him perform or that he was still performing but we had free tickets so why not. He was actually pretty entertaining. Hit the slots and didn't do well at all. Had loads of fun though. Today we went to the boat show at the convention center. Get well so we can take you guys out on the boat this summer.
Take care,
Betty

Hi Chizzie-

Been thinking, thinking, thinking about you. Including this am at 4:30 - it would have been 6:30 am your time and I figured you were probably already up and around, getting ready....hopefully to go home!

Also thought of you when I was on my walk with the dogs - saw a HUGE hawk. And it was up close and personal. Don't know if he was scoping out one of the little white mutts or what.

And last night I thought of you when I stood on the back porch watching a couple of cowboys herd the neighbor's cattle back up into Lost Canyon. I thought of you because they were: a.) Young and cute and B.)wearing chaps and spurs. All I can say is, Mama, let your babies grow up to be cowboys.

Hope this gave you a laugh and that you're home by now and doing what you need to get your strength back. I love you honey.

Also hope you had some AHA! moments today, because that's the Daily Word.

Aha!

Divine ideas inspire me on my path of fulfillment.

I may have felt amazed when, after feeling lost in a fog of confusion, I suddenly saw my right path become clear. Or I may be more than a bit astonished when a spontaneous, inner prompting offers a refreshing solution when I had thought there was none.

These "aha" moments are blessings that bring enlightenment--bright ideas, innovative methods. These seemingly unexplainable moments of inspiration are times when--even for a second--I have gotten my own limited thinking out of the way.

I've made room for divine ideas to flow into my mind and be expressed in my life. I take a deep breath and release it in a joyful "Thank You, God, for the gifts of new opportunities."

"The prophet Jeremiah said to them, 'Very well: I am going to pray to the Lord your God as you request, and whatever the Lord answers you I will tell you; I will keep nothing back from you.'"--Jeremiah 42:4

Dear Debbie,

How awful for you once again! I was so surprised when I read your blog that you were at HUP. Sounds like some "magic tea" is in order.
Hopefully by the time you read this you are home. As we all know you heal quickest there.
The beach has been beautiful these warmer sunny days--a summer tease for sure. I think of you often when walking the beach and whisper a prayer into the ocean that you stay strong and well.
Take care Deb and hope to talk to you soon.
Love, Donna K.

Hi, Deb. I have been checking the blog and glad you were doing well until this last episode. I pray that all will turn around and you will be feeling perky for the spring coming. Terry and I are in Florida for a week. Weather is good and relaxing (although you know that is difficult for me!). Will keep you up to dae about the DC trip in April. Thank you for the Valentine - so good to hear from you. Miss you and love you! Cheryl Crone

Hi Chiz-

Just checking in and seeing what's up. Are you a homegirl yet? I sure hope so, honey. I know you love your homeys on Rhoades 6 - but there's no place like home when you're trying to recover from a rough patch and have some of Donna's "magic tea". (sounds interesting)

Today, I'm taking a tramp in the woods (heh) with my pal Naomi. We're hiking a place called Gateway Mesa. It is the open space that links Lost Canyon (behind the house) with Castlewood Canyon - a big state park over in Franktown. It snowed last night - but only a couple of inches. Hope it's not too cold! Brr.

Well, that's about it from here. Mr. Marvin heads back to the UK next week and I hope to reorganize my pantry. (I know how you love hearing that!)

I love you honey.

Kris

P.S. Visitor Allison - congrats on your stories! Good luck putting the finishing touches on them and if you decide to go the self published route check out blurb.com. I worked as a mentor on a project (here) and we used blurb. It was easy to use and the finished product was very impressive!
