Day 5

After a very interesting drive in this morning, we had a nice day today visiting with Debbie and seeing some of her friends. When I arrived at about 8:00 AM, Ms. Sociality was on the phone and had taken a bath, all by herself, and was ready to do her laps. Lucky for Deb, her breakfast arrived and she ate instead. So far she has been able to eat at least 1/2 of a portion -- which although not much -- is better than she had been eating.

After breakfast, we did about 5 laps around the nurses station and then I understood that "Debbie laps" are different than real laps. 5 real laps are 7 Debbie laps. But so long as she is moving, who cares how you count them?

After a short nap, 3 of her friends arrived and bearing gifts. Debbie now has 12 bandanas, a pink Eagles hat and a new quilt for her bed. With all of the cards, letters, Christmas angels, Santas and a little Christmas tree, her room is looking like "Debbie's place." Since she has no drawers to hide her clutter in, we have a little pink plastic bucket where she hides her extra stuff. Funny how whatever we can't find ends up in that bucket.

Mary Ellen's husband made a great batch of chicken soup and Debbie had that for lunch. They have microwave ovens, special frigerators, etc. for patient comfort and there are more than a few items in the fridge that now belong to Debbie. Denny brought a batch of wanton soup and Kim brought rice pudding that Deb has enjoyed as well. That kind of comfort food is what she seems to enjoy the best.

After lunch we did some more laps -- 2 less than "Debbie laps" -- and she took another nap. Then Kris McLay came, decked out in her fur hat, Cossack boots and disco ball. We had some ribbon left over from another gift and used that to affix the disco ball to the IV rack above the bed. When they added the love beads, the nurses got a little worried. We will pipe in the music tomorrow!

At about 3:30, Deb got a little uncomfortable and began to spike a temperature. We had to cut Kris' visit short -- something we all need to get used to and accept -- and Deb was having some problems going to the bathroom, i.e., too many times. After about 45 minutes of up and down she settled down and was able to sleep for a few hours. She ate half a sandwich for dinner and the temperature was coming down when I left to come home.

Deb has her blogs to read tonight and is so glad to hear from everyone. Having spent a full day there today, it could be a lonely place without this kind of connection with all of you. She does have internet connectivity in the family lounge and we can access the blog on her floor. Tomorrow we plan to show Deb how to do that and maybe she can post her own blog??

Deb sends her love to everyone and needs your support and prayers now. She will be going into a very difficult stage over the next week. Her white blood count is falling and her immune system will be shut down shortly. This will result in some inevitable infections, fevers and overwhelming fatigue. Please check with us before coming down to visit for the next week.

Deb sends her love to all.

Hey Debbie. It sounds like your day has had it's ups and downs, but one thing is certain--you've got to be one of the most loved ladies I know. I hope you can feel all the love and prayers that so many people are sending your way. Keep eating and walking, it will be better!

Love,
Cathy

Debbie and Joe:

This blogging has been fantastic. I read this and somehow I feel like I can see you all there in the room. It frustrates me so that we are out in the Midwest. Tonight Brendan had another basketball game. He scored four points and played well on defense. He was home earlier this week with some sort of crud. I think the rest did him some good. Tomorrow, Mere, Brendan, Mere's friend Katie and I are headed to Indianpolis to watch UK play Indiana. I hope they play well. Dave is on call and Colin admits to not being a Kentucky fan so he gave Katie his seat. We'll be thinking of you as we spend an overnight in Indiana (your old stomping ground).

Joe's comments about the laps is reminescent(sp) of his running and you walking at the shore.

Keep the faith! Love ya Leenie (cousin Eileen)

My Chizzie-

Just want to sign in and tell you I love you. I know these next few days are going to be tough, but I know that you also have a lot of people around you helping you tough it out. We will get through this girlfriend.

I'll call Joe in the morning - probably from NYC for a status check. Karen has gotten me geared up for another trip into the city. (My brother is probably going to kill me.) It's a good thing I have my cossack boots at the ready, Joe!

I second Cathy Goodyear's emotion: Keep eating and walking as much as you can, my Debbelina. It's harder to hit a moving target.

And Sue - after hanging the disco ball I would say that some twinkie lights are definitely called for. I'm hoping that every day at 3:30 am for the next month when our dear Chiz is woken up for her daily weight and the day's first check of her vital stats she can feel like she is out nightclubbing - not being disturbed when she needs her rest!

And Donna Smith - what a great thing to do! Debbie was sweetly tucked into her bed with her pretty snowman quilt when we arrived. So festive! And those flannel holiday pillowcases looked like the perfect place for our little Chizling to lay her pretty head.

I hope you're laying your pretty head there right now and you are asleep honey!

You should rest easier now that we have finally heard from the definitive source, Nancy, that in the UK, pecker does indeed mean "nose" or "beak". Thank heavens we cleared that up!

I love you Debbie. Keep your pecker up.

FOD's - keep your peckers clean!

P.S. Debbie looked great today gang - but then again, she always looks great to me. The thing that impressed me the most was that she knew when to say when. When the fever started coming up on her and the nausea hit - she knew it was time for her to go into healing mode. And that's when we knew it was time to mosey on over to the Four Seasons. I did have a cocktail for you Chiz and I shamelessly flirted with the waiter like you taught me to...

Hey Deb- just wanted to drop you a note before bed to let you know I think about you all the time. I hope the next few weeks fly by. We are all pulling for you and can't wait to have you back with us. Morgan is really getting a good laugh at me learning to use the computer to talk to you- amazing the ridecule we'll take to communicate with our friends. Keep your chin up and eat all the goodies they bring you.

love, Holly

Good Morning Deb,
I have been up since 4:30 making cookies and getting ready for a Silpada demonstration on Monday. Your friend Sue is doing it. I have a gang from work, some of the Vegas girls and my book club ladies. Thanks for turning me on to it. I am starting my own collection.
My foot still aches but with shopping and decorating, I just have to grin and bear it. I am going to a store in Willow Grove Mall - The Walking Store- that is supposed to have great shoes with high arches to help the other problem, plantar fasciitis(sp).
I am glad to hear that youare eating some, you need to keep your strength up.
Last night at Marians I met 5 of her friends. Beverly-must be the name-was a lot of fun to talk to. She was born in Wilkes-Barre and we talked about places we both remember fromther. She was born in 53 also and suggested a place on the Mexican Riveria for when we turn 53. You HAVE to come with us! Ingrid-another friend-told us about some family members who had what you have and they beat it!!!!!! Eileen, Barb and I were so glad to hear that.
Your room sounds so comfy, but are there Hershey Kisses next to the bed like you do at the shore? A disco ball? It reminds me of Saturday night Fever. The nurses must love coming into take care of you.
Well, I'm going to go back to making cookies. I send you my love and prayers and energy.
Love,
Beth

Deb,

Greetings from Tennis way!! I have been thinking about you all week, everytime I look out my window at your beautiful home. But we know that it is empty without you and will only come back to life when you are back inside!! Bob and I are sending our thoughts and prayers your way. We always knew you had alot of friends, and have been fortunate enough to meet some of them over the years, but with this blog we have been amazed by the incredible network that you have. How rich you are!! And we are sure that all of your friends, family and neighbors will pull you through this ordeal!!

I guess I could be considered an FOD and I really enjoyed reading how that came about. But, I figured out that I am also a NOD, Neighbor of Debbie...a distinct honor to be sure!!

Deb...I was happy to hear that your room decor was ready for the holidays. Has Joe brought in any of your Possible Dreams...now they would fill the room!! I have my Vaillancourt Santa's out and if it wasn't for you I never would have started collecting them. Now they have a more special meaning to me.

We hope you have a comfortable week ahead...we know it will be difficult, but we are all praying for you. We hope to visit soon, but in the meantime take care. Lots of love and hugs!!

P>S> Casey is waiting for you at the bottom of our driveway...any treats??

Love...Karen, Bob, Carolyn & Bobby

good morning Debbie!
I wanted to check in and send you some more good wishes. Someone posted that you must be about the most loved woman there is and I certainly second that!! A special thank you from a brother in law to all of Deb's friends and everyone that has posted here..you are all terrific and loved!!
Shane and I just booked our trip to watch Penn State beat Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Florida better watch out as two crazed fans are soon to descend upon them.
We are hoping that this day is better than last. That is our wish for you..that each day simply is better than the last, and then you can come home.

Rick, Phyllis, Steph and Shane
